Modeling and Simulation-Based Data Engineering: Introducing Pragmatics into Ontologies for Net-Centric Information Exchange

It is often the case that a new area of inquiry, comprised of elements from seemingly disparate disciplines, yields surprising insights. Zeigler's and Hammonds's effort is no exception. While linguistics has from time to time informed mathematics and computer science, to my knowledge little has been done to date towards the application of semantics and pragmatics to this type of data exchange.
The prose is concise, clear, and conversational. Given the complexity of the two topics and the more or less mutual exclusivity of their lexicons, readers whose experience has been acquired only in the one or the other of these two disciplines will nevertheless quickly become comfortable in this discussion. The authors provide many examples to illustrate their line of reasoning, all drawn from a wide variety of sources.
As an IT professional with 15 years' experience and an advanced degree in a foreign language, I found this book satisfying, illuminating, and provocative. While it is intended to address a specific engineering problem, its implications extend well beyond its stated purview. Heartily recommended for those who would like to think about the synergies of data engineering and pragmatics, and also for those who want to think about what might be beyond the horizon.

Estuaries: Monitoring and Modeling the Physical System Review

Estuaries: Monitoring and Modeling the Physical System
Average Reviews:

This brief text of 157 pages is a general introduction to estuaries which assumes no previous knowledge of oceonography, for example it devotes 12 pages to the general theory of tides, and many other pages to cursury descriptions of instruments used by all oceanographers. It would be suitable for a beginning student, but has limited appeal to the specialist in estuaries.
The Humber Estuary, on the east coast of Northern England, is the main subject of the narative, with only fleeting references to other types of estuaries. The author describes several numerical models of various paramenters of this estuary, implimented using the Excel spreadsheet application. Since Excel is almost universally availble, this adds a nice quantitative component to the book. However, the author describes the implimentation of the modeling in exasperating detail, describing each key stroke for example after example. This is not good way to teach, and it fills up many pages of an already short essay.

Estuaries are complex and fascinating natural environments, where constantly changing water depths generate rapidly reversing currents and transport vast quantities of salt, heat, and sediment on a daily basis. Estuaries: Monitoring and Modeling the Physical System examines these processes, offering extensive information about the geological evolution of estuaries, and details of bathymetry, tides, currents, salt and heat, and suspended sediment.By carefully building a working computer model which accurately emulates the complexities inherent in estuaries, students learn quickly to model the tides and currents, and then to build and test salinity, temperature, and suspended sediment modules. The book is strongly supported by a website at www.blackwellpublishing.com/hardisty which includes:* Regularly updated Dynamic Internet References* Excel routines for individual formulae and diagrams* Full coding for the estuarine modelTHE ANALYSIS OF TIDAL STREAM POWER – For Jack Hardisty's new book and the accompanying website please click here: http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-047072451X.html

Radar System Analysis and Modeling (Artech House Radar Library) Review

Radar System Analysis and Modeling (Artech House Radar Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It does not say so on the cover, but Barton points out in his Introduction that this book is actually the 3rd edition of a text, where the 2nd edition was published in 1988. The 3rd edition was motivated in no small part by advances in radar analysis and computing power since then.
As the book amply makes clear, radar analysis and modelling is very compute intensive. In 1988, some of the calculations might have necessitated one or more minicomputers. One attraction of the book is the lengthy set of nontrivial problems at the end of each chapter; which the reader is urged to tackle. Nowadays, these can be done on a personal computer, using some maths package. Hence the book's accompanying CD. However, instead of using Mathematica or Maple, Barton chose the rarer Mathsoft. The reason is that the intermediate steps are made available, so that you can easily modify these for your situations.
The radar applications in the text are heavily directed towards military usages. For historical reasons, and also because these tend to be the most technically demanding, in terms of rapid detection and identification. (See the enemy before he sees you.) With forays into Electronic Counter Measures and ECCM.
By the way, antenna design gets one lonely chapter. Perhaps somewhat cursory. But this subject is itself worthy of length monographs, and is not really the main topic here.
The level of discussion is clearly aimed at a engineer already in the field. A sophisticated, technically complex narrative. Showing as best as can be done on a declassified level, the limits of current analysis. A reader might reasonably ruminate that if this much can be revealed, what then is the true state of the art of military radar?

This is a good follow-on book to Krenk's book on beams, columns & cables. The total and updated Lagrangian formulations are covered. Topics include bars, beam-columns, and solids. Requires a great deal of continuum mechanics knowledge to understand. Would be good for a graduate course in nonlinear FEM analysis of structures.

This book presents a theoretical treatment of nonlinear behavior of solids and structures in such a way that it is suitable for numerical computation, typically using the Finite Element Method. Starting out from elementary concepts, the author systematically uses the principle of virtual work, initially illustrated by truss structures, to give a self-contained and rigorous account of the basic methods. The author illustrates the combination of translations and rotations by finite deformation beam theories in absolute and co-rotation format, and describes the deformation of a three-dimensional continuum in material form. A concise introduction to finite elasticity is followed by an extension to elasto-plastic materials via internal variables and the maximum dissipation principle. Finally, the author presents numerical techniques for solution of the nonlinear global equations and summarizes recent results on momentum and energy conserving integration of time-dependent problems. Exercises, examples and algorithms are included throughout.

SAP BW Data Modeling Review

SAP BW Data Modeling

It's hard to know who this book is aimed at. Some of the theory on modelling is interesting but academic. The coverage of the SAP BW is fair but not in depth enough for certification study purposes. The "lead you by the hand screen shots" would be useful for someone trying to make their way alone through BW but ultimately you can't make your way alone through BW. The use of English is poor in many places. I read it because it's a book and therefore more portable than BW course material but that's it's most redeeming feature for me. I suppose it's an very average introduction to BW modelling but beyond that I'm not sure of it's audience.

Finally, someone has written a book which presents the traditional mechanics approach side-by-side with modern finite element analysis, in a thorough and comprehensive manner. It is clearly a great contribution.

This unique book presents the material from the elementary level to the advanced level in a way which is understandable to the engineer. However, what makes this book very special is that the theory is complemented with a great number of thought-provoking practical examples which really helps explain the theory. Even though I have worked as a Formula One design engineer for many years, I still often find myself referring to the material explained in this book. A must for the practicing engineer, student, and researcher!

I found the discussion on nonparametric simulation, though brief, to be very helpful. The book also inspired me to use Excel's Solver in ways I had not considered before.
Beyond that, I was disappointed. The book is poorly edited and lacks a coherent structure. Once in a while, entire strings of paragraphs are repeated in two different parts of the book. More serious, however, is the fact that the book is largely an advertisement for the author's proprietary software.
If you are looking for a few techniques that you can apply in an Excel environment, you will find a few nuggets here and there. However, you will mostly be skimming through the 600 pages of rambling discussion.

Simulation Modeling Methods: To Reduce Risks and Increase Performance (CD-ROM included)
Average Reviews:

I bought this book as I was interested in simulating in simprocess. The book is not useful at all neither for an experienced modeller, nor for a beginner. This is of no use for a practical modeller, theoreist or student.
It is more of an entertainment kind of book with very generalistic sporadic examples about where simulation application was successful and funny pictures, double space 16 font text with no content.
For beginners, one should rather buy "Business Process Simulation" by Laguna, which also has a student version of soft. One can go through simulation examples and learn a lot. (I bought this two books together)
In general, if you want to waist your time and money, and read something in half an hour and learn nothing, buy it. But but does it make sense to pay for nothing and make the authors rich just because they are from GACI or Ernst and Young consultancy. Bad use of their brand to promote the sales of the bad book (but probably not so bad software)

This book has a really nice, diversified selection of topics, and is quite readable. However, out of the three parts I looked at carefully, it is clear that one (the example on Global Positioning System) has a mathematical mistake (equations 3.13a,b,c), when solving a set of equations simultaneously in which all reference to y and z squared terms was lost on the right side of the equation. I think the book does well in explaining the big ideas, but one had better check all the details of the calculations before accepting them.

Mathematical Modeling of Physical Systems provides a concise and lucid introduction to mathematical modeling for students and professionals approaching the topic for the first time. It is based on the premise that modeling is as much an art as it is a science--an art that can be mastered only by sustained practice. To provide that practice, the text contains approximately 100 worked examples and numerous practice problems drawn from civil and biomedical engineering, as well as from economics, physics, and chemistry. Problems range from classical examples, such as Euler's treatment of the buckling of the strut, to contemporary topics such as silicon chip manufacturing and the dynamics of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The required mathematics are confined to simple treatments of vector algebra, matrix operations, and ordinary differential equations. Both analytical and numerical methods are explained in enough detail to function as learning tools for the beginner or as refreshers for the more informed reader. Ideal for third-year engineering, mathematics, physics, and chemistry students, Mathematical Modeling of Physical Systems will also be a welcome addition to the libraries of practicing professionals.

The book is a collection of research papers by people looking at the pricing behaviour of various commodities. The intent is to look at correlations or even causations between a commodity's price and other factors. The result is an eclectic mixture of topics.
One chapter discusses whether fluctuations in wine stockpiles affect wine prices. Apparently, there had been very little prior work on wine pricing, especially in a global context. Inventory fluctuations in the major wine producing countries are given, along with changes in pricing in those nations. Various statistical tests are done to tease out any correlations.
Other chapters delve into subjects like coal in the US and Indonesia, and scrap metal prices in the US.
A strong background in statistics is required to understand the book.

This book covers quantitative physiology under the particularly stressful conditions of exercise. It is divided into five basic sections: Exercise limitations, exercise biomechanics, cardiovascular responses, respiratory responses, and thermal responses. The author has obviously done a lot of research into the vast body of literature on mathematical modeling of physiological systems. When models are not covered in detail, he gives references to many sources.
As a biomedical engineer, I have used this book regularly to obtain such things as functions describing the relationship of exercise level and oxygen consumption and references to who has done mathematical models of the thermoregulatory system. This book should be on the shelf of anyone who is interested in quantitative physiology, or of engineers designing sports equipment or other similar biomedical devices.
