Christophe Basso worked very hard giving years of his life to produce the best Switch-Mode Power Supply book available, by far. I have a large collection of books on SMPS and although many are very good books, they are not nearly as complete or practical as Basso's book. He derives all his equations and then shows many real world example designs from start to finish. In my opinion and the opinion of many power electronics professionals and power electronics college students, the averaged switch model is the easiest to create and most intuitive to understand and use. Basso has digested the best information from the best references and then creatively enhanced many models and invented new SPICE models/sub-circuits you need for large and small signal analysis and simulations with the SPICE of your choice. His knowledge of creating analog behavioral models (ABM) that perform just like the real components or circuit functions, is amazing. He created ABM PWMs from individual ABM components. Everything he creates, he verifies. You buy this book at a bargain price and get a CD with all the models/sub-circuits you need to check your existing designs and start new designs with the highest confidence. Once you look at his ABMs, you will want to create some of your own because it is so much fun. In a short time, I've used his models/sub-circuits and his techniques with PSPICE to identify lack of or no phase margin in Switch-Mode Power Supplies for a huge corporation. I have many more power supplies to analyze/simulate and several new ones to design.
I've worked as a power electronics engineer for many years and I'm so thankful to Christophe Basso for working so hard and smart to produce the best Switch-Mode Power Supply book ever written. Very thorough and very practical. Get this book and apply Basso's knowledge, techniques, and SPICE models/sub-circuits to your designs and you will never have another unstable Switch-Mode or Linear Power Supply.

I teach a simulation course using this book. It is one of the best textbooks I have ever used in any discipline. It is extremely well designed for an undergraduate audience. For more emphasis on the statistical fundamentals of simulation, I recommend Law and Kelton's graduate book, but if your goal is to complete a project for a company, or to prepare a comprehensive undergraduate simulation course with plenty of modeling examples and useful exercises, then this is the book that will take you from zero to hero.

I picked up this book so that I could understand a geostatisical model I was using for petroleum exploration, and it did a beautiful job of laying out the conceptual framework of the math. As a geologist with not so much mathematical background, I was able to pick through the equations and derivations (which I imagine would be useful for those so inclined) to get at the actual substance. This is a surprisingly readable text for a math book, highly recommended.

This text fulfills a need for an advanced-level work covering both the theory and application of geostatistics. It covers the most important areas of geostatistical methodology, introducing tools for description, quantitative modeling of spatial continuity, spatial prediction, and assessment of local uncertainty and stochastic simulation. It also details the theoretical background underlying most GSLIB programs. The tools are applied to an environmental data set, but the book includes a general presentation of algorithms intended for students and practitioners in such diverse fields as soil science, mining, petroleum, remote sensing, hydrogeology, and the environmental sciences.

There is more significance to the title than one may initially assume. Some "play" can be taken much too seriously as when overzealous parents scream at their children as they begin to compete in organized sports; other "play" is not treated seriously enough as when a corporation discourages (perhaps even punishes) innovative thinking unless it has an immediate and favorable impact on the bottom line. Many executives, thus abused, may then vent their frustrations by behaving boorishly at a Little League game.
In the Foreword, Tom Peters quotes Schrage's assertion that "Innovative prototypes generate innovative teams. Not vice versa." Peters then observes that, in Serious Play, the "big idea" is that "the prototyping process becomes the scaffolding" for an enterprise's approach to innovation. As Schrage explains, "I have always enjoyed rehearsals more than performances." I suggest that you keep that statement clearly in mind as you proceed through the book. It reveals much about Schrage's perspective on the correlations between prototypes and innovation.
Here is how the book is organized: Part I: Getting Real, Part II: Model Behavior, and Part III:S(t)imulating Innovation. Schrage then provides a User's Guide and Bibliography. Throughout the book, he shares a wealth of real-world experience which explains what innovation is, and, what it can help to accomplish, not only with the design of a new product or service but also with the formulation of new and better ways for people to work together. The key is simulation; moreover, "not just playing with representations of ideas" (lots of ideas, the more the better) but "playing with the various versions of representations of ideas."
Near the end of the final chapter, Schrage poses a number of critically important questions, suggesting that the "best hope for answering these questions, or coping with their implications, is to build or grow models and play with them seriously." The world's best companies simulate to innovate. For example: American Airlines, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric, IBM, IDEO, Walt Disney, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, and Royal Dutch Shell. Schrage believes that the creative tensions between innovators who design and innovators who evolve "will likely result in breakthroughs in products, services, and their yet-to-be-anticipated hybrids." So, why not prototype how to prototype? Why not play simulation games which reveal new and better ways to simulate?
Tom Peters describes Serious Play as "simply the best book on innovation I've ever read." I agree. Perhaps you will, also.

This book covers many interesting topics in molecular simulation, both Monte Carlo and M.D. It focuses on understanding the main ideas rather than giving long codes. It's a good place to start, but it also covers some ideas not found in many other books. When I try to extend my molecular dynamics program I always check what Frenkel and Smit have to say about it.

This sophisticated yet accessible book has much to offer. While many groups today are applying complexity and agent-based modeling to combat, the models developed by Ilachinski and described in this book, ISAAC and EINSTein, are the true pioneers, and the story behind their development is fascinating.
Following the Vietnam War, a major rethinking about the type of education and skills needed to fight a modern-day war resulted in many reforms that led to the U.S. military's swift victory in "Operation Desert Storm" in 1991. Building on those successes, the United States Marine Corps undertook a search for new discoveries with the potential to influence the military's thinking about and readiness for future conficts. Through this effort they learned about the emerging new field of nonlinear studies, also known as chaos theory and complexity science.
In 1995, under the direction of Lt. General Paul K. Van Riper (now retired) an "Office of New Sciences" was established within the Marine Corps Combat Development Command--a sort of futures think tank for the Marine Corps--to explore the possible applications of complexity to the Marine Corps' strategic thinking about the future of combat.
In the Forward to this book General Van Riper writes, "In an initial discussion Dr. Ilachinski (employed by the Center for Naval Analysis and invited by Gen. Van Riper to meet with him to discuss these ideas) suggested we focus our research on the relevance of complexity theory to land combat because of its unique characteristics, these being hierarchically organized units engaged in multifaceted interactions with each other and the enemy over complicated terrain." This book is the story of the project, insights and models that resulted from those early conversations.
Despite (I write with a laugh) his math and physics background, Ilachinski is a wonderful writer, taking his time with each subject and thus making this book accessible to the nonscientist with a basic understanding of complexity. It's also fun to work with the basic model (described here in detail) and explore some of the more abstract ideas from complexity and their applications to many domains beyond those for which it was originally developed (namely, combat). There is also within this book a self-contained primer on complexity. I was so impressed with the clarity of this section that I asked the book's publisher to make this section available as a separate publication (to which they agreed) for my workshops and seminars on complexity. This book is a valued reference that I have used over and over. As an aside, Andy is also an accomplished photographer (visit his photography website) whose stunning photographs capture nature's elegance, simplicity, beauty and complexity.
As a final tribute to Ilachinski's incredible pioneering work, General Van Riper writes in the book's Forward, "When histories of this era are written Dr. Andrew Ilachinski is likely to emerge as the 'Father of Military Complexity Research'...Those in positions with responsibility for planning and conducting the Nation's defense today and into the foreseeable future ignore this book at great peril for it offers deep and meaningful insights into war on land." You won't be disappointed with this book. It's worth every penny!

While this book does have some useful content from the couple chapters I have read, the material is overshadowed by a serious problem - this is almost not readable in the literal sense.
There is something about the small font size and presentation that makes reading the book tough on the eyes, even with a bright light. I read a lot and this is one of the worst presentations I have seen.The other students in the class who I talked with about this textbook also had the same comment. For a book that charges over $100, this is inexcusable.
Unless you want to wind up with a pair of glasses sooner than you think or get a stronger prescription than you have now, avoid this book.

I've read handful of books on quantitative finance over the years. Most of a few good books that focus on rigorous mathematical treatment often lack practicality. I've been looking for books that offer a rigorous and yet intuitive, practical way to gain an understanding into quantitative finance in general and MonteCarlo simulation in particular. Therefore I often browse Matlab website in search of good books that combine theory and computation. I have found only a good one so far (Higham). But it was written rather for beginners and/or students.
Recently I found this one which is an excellent book for intermediate and advanced users, practitioners and academics alike. The book strikes a good balance between theory and practice; it presents a rigorous and yet intuitive treatment of quantitative finance, from fundamentals of probability theory and random processes, through the foundations of Monte-Carlo method and all the way to real-world applications. The book is up to date with latest research in computational finance. It contains not only simple, pedagogical Matlab programs but also more sophisticate methods such as quadratic resampling, dynamic programming technique of Barraquand and Martineau. The final chapters present the authors' own research, mostly on financial guarantees (credit derivatives) and Value at Risk.
The book presents not only rigorous theory, but also practical, well-designed Matlab programs. The programs contain useful explanatory comments so they are very easy to follow. They can be used as is or adapted for your own purposes. Recently I had to price an exotic executive stock option, and I just chose a Matlab program from the book and modified it. The whole pricing process took just a couple of hours. That is, the programs are good for practitioners working in a high-pressure environment like myself. Academic researchers will also find the Matlab programs useful as the authors generously made codes of their own research on financial guarantees and Value at Risks available. These programs serve as a good starting point for other research projects.
A drawback of this book is that you need Matlab which can be expensive if you don't qualify for an educational licence. However, it does not require other expensive add-ons. I think that interested readers can use open-source Matlab clones like Octave, Scilab etc.

David Siegmund is a famous probabilist who is both a great lecturer and writer. I personally audited his advanced probability course at Stanford. He coauthored a book on optimal stopping with Herb Robbins and has written other fine books on sequential analysis and repeated significance testing. In recent years he as well as Brad Efron and other Stanford and Berkeley statistics professors has studied the mathematics, probability theory and statistics associated with human genetics and microarray data. This book presents the theory and application of the appropriate probabilistic methods. Anyone with a serious interest in this topic should get the book.
The book assumes some knowledge of probability and statistics. So a novice in the field of statistics could have trouble with the text and require more development. Also for the statistician it may assume a little too much knowledge of genetics. But I think it is the perfect book for the intended audience and makes a great reference.
Another text that is rigorous in terms of statistics and assume less knowledge of statistics and genetics is "Analyzing Microarray Gene Expression Data" by G. J. McLachlan, k.-A. Do and C. Amboise. You will find that I have also reviewed that text on amazon.

This book details the statistical concepts used in gene mapping, first in the experimental context of crosses of inbred lines and then in outbred populations, primarily humans. It presents elementary principles of probability and statistics, which are implemented by computational tools based on the R programming language to simulate genetic experiments and evaluate statistical analyses. Each chapter contains exercises, both theoretical and computational, some routine and others that are more challenging. The R programming language is developed in the text.

Remember Conway's Game of Life? Surely you must, if you are interested in this book. The Game has been around since the 70s. The editors have cultivated recent research papers that demonstrate how far the field has advanced. Reinforced by some pretty colour plates that depict artificial entities [dare we call them living?] in some surroundings. These include the modelling of bee flights through a garden, and simulated trajectories of a group of bacteria.
Nor is the Game of Life ignored. One plate shows it in three dimensions. The Game is played in 2 dimensions, with time as the third dimension. An obvious choice that gives interesting trajectories of the cells.
The narrative adds to the illustrations. By describing a variety of computer simulations [worlds?]. Where the experimenter can tweak many parameters, and watch her world unfold. Some worlds are impressively rich in complexity of observed behaviours.
The only drawback in the book is its skimpy index. A mere two pages. It should have been more detailed.

This book provides an excellent description of many different integration schemes and describes their regions of stability. Understanding numerical stability is a necessity for modeling and simulation engineers. It is possible to simulate an unstable system with simulation results that appear stable. Cellier explains how and why this can happen as well as explaining other pitfalls of simulating continuous systems.

The book is a good and detailed description of what metaheuristics involves. This is applied to solving hard computational problems. There are summaries of many methods developed over the last 50 years. The simplex method. Metropolis Monte Carlo. Simulated annealing. Genetic algorithms. And others. There is deliberately not enough information about most of these for you to use them given only the book as a starting point. Space considerations.
But mostly the book explains at a higher level, how methods can be understood. Some are for exploiting; ie. intensively looking in a given region of the objective space around a starting point. Simulated annealing is a good example of such a method.
Other methods are for exploring. A broader search in the objective or solution space. Genetic algorithms, with their mutations and crossover recombinations are very strong here, using ideas borrowed from biological evolution.

One caveat is that even at a summary level, the description of tabu search was a bit unclear, compared to the excellent synopses of simulated annealing and genetic algorithms.

This book has become a classic in the field. While we now have more modern and efficient methods (like DFT) the basic approach remains the same, so it is still worth reading.
The book comes with source code in Fortran. Its main problem is that you cannot download the code in the book from the Internet, but you can get revised, more modern versions, so it's not that bad after all. The source in the book is rather limited, oriented to illustrating the points and the calculations, but if you combine it with some other reference, like Allen-Tildesley's (the other major classic), it is enough to proceed with your own implementation (should you be interested in doing one).
The math I found a bit difficult to follow as it does not match similar approaches in other quantum mechanics or molecular mechanics books, but once you get used to it, it is OK.
Coverage is fair for the date it was written and sticks to the title topic covering it very well. It is worth reading to understand many of the modern approaches, how they work and what they mean. Actually, if you are interested in this topic (enzymatic reactions) your only other resource would be to gather a number of other books and combine their contents yourself in your mind. A lot more work than having this one.
To a large extent, modern (as of 2010) work still relies mostly on the approaches exposed in this book, so it is bang for the buck, but it would be advisable to complement it with some readings on modern DFT approaches as these are now slowly taking over the semiempirical approaches described here.

This book explains why we cannot rely on observations and experiments to understand and predict weather and climate. It discusses how models and ensembles are necessary in atmospheric science. The book is written for non-scientists and is well done. As an atmospheric science student, I found this analysis very useful in an environment where model use is presumed rather than justified. It is translated from Italian so there are some translation problems. It is also wordy and repetitious in some sections. Overall, it is a useful summary of numerical weather and climate modeling.

I think Fishman's book is one of the best introduction to Monte Carlo methods, simulation and pseudo-random number generation. It is also a great reference. However if one is interested in the history of Monte Carlo including its early development in particle physics I recommen the old monograph by Hammersley and Handscomb which also does a great job at introducing the various variance reduction techniques. This is an aspect of the Monte Carlo method that Fishman does not address. It was more important in the days when computers were slow but it still has applications with certain intensive modern computing problems such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo.

This book is great for beginners just starting out with MDM as well as seasoned professionals. I was introduced to MDM with the first version of this book. That was not my copy, so I bought the second edition for myself.
This book covers everything MDM from architectural considerations to governance and market trends.
The book offers some really sound advice on building the business case for MDM and how to communicate that business case effectively. Listen to their advice!!!! I am an architect, purely a technical guy, but I can tell you from experience without the backing of the business your project will be squashed.
The book covers the technical aspects of implementation in great detail. This book will give you the insight you need to fully understand the complexities of an MDM project. There are a ton of vendors out their claiming to have a magic install of MDM available for purchase, but the truth is they just do not exist. MDM is a process with many steps involved, not a product.
All in all if you are involved or getting involved with MDM this is the book to read.
