Visualizing Project Management, 3rd Edition is an excellent read! Throughout my career I have led or have been part of projects whereby risk management was defined as risk statusing. Real risk identification and their impacts to projects were ignored. In Visualizing Project Management 3rd Edition, the book focuses on the technical aspects of projects which is critical to project succcess and has a whole chapter dedicated to risk Management (chapter 13, Opportunities and their Risks). This was extremely valuable to me. Now that I have read this book, I am eager to tackle my next project.

This book isn't for a casual reader, but it is a must have for anyone who is passionate about reptiles (snakes in particular). The chapters are highly relevant and current. The contributers are leaders in the field and add a great deal of insight on a wide variety of ecology and conservation issues. The editors do a great job of introducing the importance of snake conservation and highlighting some of the concerns plaguing snake conservation. Definitely not a book that will sit on a shelf and I will use it as a reference for many years to come.

Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate Review

Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is more significance to the title than one may initially assume. Some "play" can be taken much too seriously as when overzealous parents scream at their children as they begin to compete in organized sports; other "play" is not treated seriously enough as when a corporation discourages (perhaps even punishes) innovative thinking unless it has an immediate and favorable impact on the bottom line. Many executives, thus abused, may then vent their frustrations by behaving boorishly at a Little League game.
In the Foreword, Tom Peters quotes Schrage's assertion that "Innovative prototypes generate innovative teams. Not vice versa." Peters then observes that, in Serious Play, the "big idea" is that "the prototyping process becomes the scaffolding" for an enterprise's approach to innovation. As Schrage explains, "I have always enjoyed rehearsals more than performances." I suggest that you keep that statement clearly in mind as you proceed through the book. It reveals much about Schrage's perspective on the correlations between prototypes and innovation.
Here is how the book is organized: Part I: Getting Real, Part II: Model Behavior, and Part III:S(t)imulating Innovation. Schrage then provides a User's Guide and Bibliography. Throughout the book, he shares a wealth of real-world experience which explains what innovation is, and, what it can help to accomplish, not only with the design of a new product or service but also with the formulation of new and better ways for people to work together. The key is simulation; moreover, "not just playing with representations of ideas" (lots of ideas, the more the better) but "playing with the various versions of representations of ideas."
Near the end of the final chapter, Schrage poses a number of critically important questions, suggesting that the "best hope for answering these questions, or coping with their implications, is to build or grow models and play with them seriously." The world's best companies simulate to innovate. For example: American Airlines, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric, IBM, IDEO, Walt Disney, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, and Royal Dutch Shell. Schrage believes that the creative tensions between innovators who design and innovators who evolve "will likely result in breakthroughs in products, services, and their yet-to-be-anticipated hybrids." So, why not prototype how to prototype? Why not play simulation games which reveal new and better ways to simulate?
Tom Peters describes Serious Play as "simply the best book on innovation I've ever read." I agree. Perhaps you will, also.

Textbook of Drug Design and Discovery, Third Edition Review

but the content is excellent. For an practicing organic chemist learning medicinal chemistry, I have read/browsed many books, and have settled on this one and Wermuth's "The Practice..." as my 'A-team'.
Unfortunately, the paperback binding will crack & quickly compromise the retention of the pages, but that is not the authors fault. The content is what matters & if you are an Organic Chemist & want to learn Med Chem, I would strongly suggest you start here. I would compare this to the 'Burger' of the old days, before it became an unaffordable encylclopedia.

Data Mining Techniques in CRM: Inside Customer Segmentation Review

Data Mining Techniques in CRM: Inside Customer Segmentation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently finished reading Data Mining Techniques in CRM: Inside Customer Segmentation. It is a very didactic book written by Tsiptsis and Chorianopoulos. The authors did a very good job in vulgarizing data mining concepts for the reader. That means nearly no formula. But don't misunderstand me, this is not a book only for beginner. Some deep concepts of data mining are presented. The only particularity is that everything is explained with words and pictures. I really appreciated the approach taken by the authors.
The first part of the book explains data mining concepts. Techniques such as clustering, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and decision trees are introduced. Since clustering is the most used technique in CRM (Customer Relationship Management), it has a particular focus from the authors. Specific topics such as evaluating the clustering results or profiling are discussed. A very interesting chapter is the one showing examples of data marts in CRM applications (retailers, telco and retail banking).
The second part of the book focuses on CRM applications such as segmentation, cross/up-selling, churn, etc. Full chapters are devoted to customer segmentation in banking, retail and telco. These chapters really give detailed information for such projects (data to consider, aggregations, important factors, result interpretation, etc.). It is clear that the authors have a strong experience in CRM.
To conclude, this is an excellent book for any data miner or anybody involved in CRM. The text is clear and pictures are well done (and funny which is rare enough to be mentioned). From basic to advanced topics, the book is a very pleasant journey inside data mining with a clear focus on customer segmentation. Really advised if you're not a fan of formulas.

The idea behind this book is excellent, covering the practical aspects of statistics (and some management science) required in business. However, the text is riddled with errors and the explanation of the underlying concepts leaves much to be desired. The only thing that prevented me from rating it 1 star is the useful guides on solving problems within Excel and its add-ins, albeit that old versions of the software are used. There are much better books available.

Modeling the Environment, Second Edition Review

Modeling the Environment, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Modeling the Environment, Second Edition

Modeling the Environment was the first textbook in an emerging field-the modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies in environmental management. This new edition brings the book thoroughly up to date and reaffirms its status as the leading introductory text on the subject. System dynamics is one of the most widely known and widely used methods of modeling. The fundamental principles of this approach are demonstrated here with a wide range of examples, including geo-hydrology, population biology, epidemiology and economics. The applications demonstrate the transferability of the systems approach across disciplines, across spatial scales, and across time scales. All of the models are implemented with stock and flow software programs such as Stella and Vensim. These programs are easy and fun to learn, and they allow students to develop realistic models within the first few weeks of a college course. System dynamics has emerged as the most common approach in collaborative projects to address environmental problems. The stock and flow structures and the emphasis on feedback control provide a common language that is understood by scientists from many disciplines. Although the interdisciplinary approach described here is widely used in practice, there are few books to aid instruction. Modeling the Environment meets the urgent need for instructional materials in interdisciplinary modeling of environmental systems.

Modeling for Learning Organizations (System Dynamics Series) Review

Modeling for Learning Organizations (System Dynamics Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Modeling for Learning Organizations" builds off of the extensive experience of top professors and consultants using the SD tools to test strategies and build an understanding of firm and industry dynamics.
"Modeling" also includes a section overviewing the various simulation software packages available to modelers. Though developers like High-Performance Systems, Vensim, Pugh-Roberts, and PowerSim have made product enhancements to date, the sections from each company provide a great introduction to what is out there how each package can be applied.
The most valuable aspect of the book is probably in the case studies and methodological explorations of several authors. A number of key insights are offered as authors reflect upon the successes and shortcoming of the methods each chose to use to explore and develop models in a variety of business and public environments.
This is definitely a must have for any SD library.

Conventional wisdom says that we can learn from our errors, but errors in the business world can be prohibitively costly. To truly understand how complex business organizations function requires different tools than most managers have been given. Yet managers need methods to understand how their organization works in order to test policies, discover flaws in thinking, and find the hidden leveragepoints within the complex systems they manage. Through a system simulation, the dynamics of the whole system, not just the individual parts, becomes apparent. The outcome of current and future situations becomes possible to predict and with this information, managers can focus on the changes that need to be made. The distinguished contributors to Modeling for Learning Organizations include Jay W. Forrester, Peter Senge, and Arie De Geus. You will learn about leading applications such as:
Shell's work on modeling the oil producers.
The Management Flight Simulator, a computer-based case learning environment pioneered by John Sterman and others at MIT
The landmark Claims Learning Laboratory at Hanover Insurancecompanies.
For managers, professionals, academicians, and everyone who recognizes the profound implications of modeling, this book is an excellent resource. It offers a broad understanding of the modeling process, discusses a multitude of case studies, and provides a review of the most recent simulation software.

Integrated Practice in Architecture: Mastering Design-Build, Fast-Track, and Building Information Modeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The term "integrated practice" was quickly dispatched in 2007 when the California Council of the AIA presented "Integrated Project Delivery - A Working Definition" at the AIA National Convention - and for good reason. Integrated practice is an internal affair for each of the Owner, Architect and Contractor. Integrated Project Delivery brings all parties involved in the development of a project into the discussion. In addition, for the time being - and for some time into the future - any practice is going to involve both traditional and integrated project delivery. Finally, I found the book confusing in the way it tends to equate BIM with Integrated Practice, when the two are certainly seperable, if not independent. I don't know of a better book out there at present, but I wish I'd waited for one before buying.

Ethical Leadership in Turbulent Times: Modeling the Public Career of George C. Marshall Review

Ethical Leadership in Turbulent Times: Modeling the Public Career of George C. Marshall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ethical Leadership in Turbulent Times describes the life story of George. C. Marshall, his rise to power in the officer corps of the US Army, and subsequent roles as both Secretaries of Defense and State. Of particular interest are his impeccable character and unwavering honesty, traits that established him not only as a leader but mentor to many young officers.
Given the state of unpreparedness the military found itself in at the start of WWII, I shudder to think what would have been the fate of our nation had not Marshall been there with his guiding hand. It was a steady hand that worked with a divided Officer Corps and a sometimes hostile and selfish Congress, to mold a plan that brought the country to full mobilization and, ultimately, victory against two enemies.
I think the relevance of Marshall's character is that it sets a high standard of honesty for the times in which we live, times that are rift with deceit and lies found throughout all levels of government and business.
After reading this remarkable work, one will walk away with the following conclusion: George C. Marshall was truly one of America's greatest men. Gerald Popps has magnificently succeeded in portraying that fact.

In Ethical Leadership in Turbulent Times, leadership and organizational theory are blended with early 20th Century history to model public leadership that is both monumentally effective and classically ethical. What is leadership? What makes leadership good or bad? To answer these questions, Gerald M. Pops draws on the multi-faceted career of George C. Marshall as an extended case study, focusing on the timely subject of leadership in public service. The dominating traits of Marshall's career were his character, virtues, and ethical practices in two world wars, his efforts to keep the peace and promote economic recovery following World War II, his style of management, and his approach to international diplomacy and nation-building. Pops shows how Marshall's leadership was unique, given the ethical qualities displayed in his character and instilled in the organizations he led. All of these are examined in the context of his long career, and related to an abundant body of leadership theory, in order to successfully present Marshall as an effective public leader not only of the military and political realms, but of business and society as well. This makes the book ideal for students and scholars in the fields of political science, public administration, and the burgeoning field of leadership studies. It is also a fascinating read for all those with a love of twentieth century and military history.

Optimal Inventory Modeling of Systems: Multi-Echelon Techniques (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) Review

Optimal Inventory Modeling of Systems: Multi-Echelon Techniques (International Series in Operations Research and Management Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excerpted from the original Logistics Spectrum review by Dr. Jezdimir Knesevic, 1993
The book is written for the logistician who is concerned with the achievement of the required operational availability of systems, and whose main objective and responsibility is to make decisions related to inventory items, item location and investment in spares. The optimization methodology developed considers trade-offs between stock at the operating locations and supporting depots (also called the multi-echelon problems), and between stock levels for an item and its sub-items (also called the multi-indenture problems). All models developed are on an analytical nature, which provides the decision-maker with an efficient tool for the determination of optimal stockage policies.
The philosophical concepts of the book are addressed in Chapter 1, followed by the corresponding mathematical techniques in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 covers the mathematics related to the joint optimization of stock levels at operating and stockage/supporting bases. The estimation of demand rates that do not stay constant is considered in Chapter 4, where the negative binomial is used as a model, together with models that are based on the Poisson distribution (variance-to-mean ratios equal to one). The mathematics for a multi-echelon, multi-indenture optimization are developed in Chapter 5. The problem concerning periodic resupply for repairable items is addressed in Chapters 6 and 7. The associated concept is subsequently illustrated through an example application related to the Space Station Freedom. The main subject of Chapter 8 is the cannibalization problem and the associated mathematics. The last chapter, Chapter 9, of the textbook is dedicated to practical real-world problems relating to modeling and application of models, where both advantages and disadvantages are analyzed.
Undoubtedly, a book of of such great integrity deserves a place on the shelf or any person, library, or organization whose interests lie in the domain of inventory theory and its application to complex systems.

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation Review

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Managing Business Complexity' is a great start at bridging the significant academic work in complexity science over recent years to business applications. It provides an introduction to agent-based simulations and an overview of the characteristics and advantages of agents, and walks the reader through two illustrative examples. Such examples are especially helpful to readers with little or no previous experience using agent-based models.
Applications of complexity science to business are still in their infancy. As such, the discussion in the book leans towards the academic, and more pointedly towards programmers rather than business practitioners with scant scientific background. Future editions of this book might benefit from including further business applications, and including the impact to bottom line.
This book is highly recommended as an overview of this exciting subject and its applicability to business situations.

Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), a way to simulate a large number of choices by individual actors, is one of the most exciting practical developments in business modeling since the invention of relational databases. It represents a new way to understand data and generate information that has never been available before--a way for businesses to view the future and to understand and anticipate the likely effects of their decisions on their markets and industries. It thus promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that businesses in many areas use computers to support practical decision-making.Managing Business Complexity is the first complete business-oriented agent-based modeling and simulation resource. It has three purposes: first, to teach readers how to think about ABMS, that is, about agents and their interactions; second, to teach readers how to explain the features and advantages of ABMS to other people and third, to teach readers how to actually implement ABMS by building agent-based simulations. It is intended to be a complete ABMS resource, accessible to readers who haven't had any previous experience in building agent-based simulations, or any other kinds of models, for that matter. It is also a collection of ABMS business applications resources, all assembled in one place for the first time. In short, Managing Business Complexity addresses who needs ABMS and why, where and when ABMS can be applied to the everyday business problems that surround us, and how specifically to build these powerful agent-based models.

If you did not do modeling before and have no idea where to start from - this book is for you. It is well written and it is fun!
I had to do some modeling for a project that I have been working on. At that moment I did not have much experience in modeling, especially in modeling coupled economic and natural systems. I was looking for a good guide in ecological economic modeling but could not find anything user-friendly and interdisciplinary. I came across the web-course by Dr. Voinov and started it. The book is a great addition to the course. The web-course as well as this textbook lead you through the essential steps of model design and implementation, introduce you to main challenges and ways to resolve them, and give you some great illustrations from practical applications of ecological economics. I especially like that it provides not only the theory of modeling for ecological economics but also discusses software tools and gives you hands on experience with the exercises. I was very excited to see that the textbook is out there now. Enjoy!

Modeling is a key component to sciences from mathematics to life science, including environmental and ecological studies. By looking at the underlying concepts of the software, we can make sure that we build mathematically feasible models and that we get the most out of the data and information that we have. This book shows how models can be analyzed using simple math and software to generate meaningful qualitative descriptions of system dynamics. This book shows that even without a full analytical, mathematically rigorous analysis of the equations, there may be ways to derive some qualitative understanding of general behavior of a system. By relating some of the modeling approaches and systems theory to real world examples the book illustrates how these approaches can help understand concepts such as sustainability, peak oil, adaptive management, optimal harvest and other practical applications.* Relates modeling approaches and systems theory to real world examples * Teaches students to build mathematically feasible models and get the most of our the data and information available* Wide range of applications in hydrology, population dynamics, market cycles, sustainability theory, management, and more

This text is required for a course I am taking as a graduate student. The book is not worth the paper it is printed on. If you are looking for a good introduction to environmental modeling, keep looking. If you are looking for a good introduction to Stella modeling software, keep looking. This book comes with Stella 5.0, which is nearly 10 years old. The inclusion of Stella tutorials almost seems to be an afterthought, because the authors don't use the same terminology as presented in the software. Also, navigation within the book is hindered by poor organizational structure and plain black figures, tables, and text throughout. Many of the figures are drawn by hand (poorly). This topic is supposed to be dynamic and exciting, but the book is dull, disorganized, and disappointing.
