Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management (Frank J Fabozzi Series) Review

Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management (Frank J Fabozzi Series)

Quick fact:
1) Highly recommand this book to serious Quants.
2) Graduate lever math is required for serious reader.
3) Good reference book and good for self-study
4) Well written, easy read.
5) worth the money.
The field of quantitative techniques have developed so much in the last 10 years, but almost no book cover enough serious topics about these new directions. I had already learn a bit of the robust techniques while working, including robust estimates, robust portfolio construction, error control, bayesian estimates and others. But those are all picked up in pieces, at different times, and with much research efforts. So you can imagine my delight to see a book that covers a lot of the pieces concisely.
This book itself is very well written, occasionally misspelled math labels are easily corrected by more math inclined reader, and will not interfare with casual reading. Like many of Fabozzi books, overall organization is slightly loose, so that you can start any chapter in the book and still get pretty much decent view about that subject. But better written for quants than some of Fabozzi's early books (which are mainly used as reference books)
what is missing in this book?
just one: sometimes, reference papers or books are given even though a little more details would save serious reader a lot more time. Yes, I know, those are advance topics, still would like to see them as a serious reader. Maybe as appendix for relevent chapers.
Over all, worth every penny of it.

Praise for Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management"In the half century since Harry Markowitz introduced his elegant theory for selecting portfolios, investors and scholars have extended and refined its application to a wide range of real-world problems, culminating in the contents of this masterful book. Fabozzi, Kolm, Pachamanova, and Focardi deserve high praise for producing a technically rigorous yet remarkably accessible guide to the latest advances in portfolio construction."--Mark Kritzman, President and CEO, Windham Capital Management, LLC"The topic of robust optimization (RO) has become 'hot' over the past several years, especially in real-world financial applications. This interest has been sparked, in part, by practitioners who implemented classical portfolio models for asset allocation without considering estimation and model robustness a part of their overall allocation methodology, and experienced poor performance. Anyone interested in these developments ought to own a copy of this book. The authors cover the recent developments of the RO area in an intuitive, easy-to-read manner, provide numerous examples, and discuss practical considerations. I highly recommend this book to finance professionals and students alike."--John M. Mulvey, Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering, Princeton University

Linear Programming: Foundations and Extensions (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) Review

I read the 2nd edition of Dr. Vanderbei's text in its entirety before taking my doctoral qualifying exams. I was shocked to read some of the negative reviews -- this is an outstanding introductory text for a graduate-level course!
In my opinion, the text strikes a delicate balance between two extremes: a strict treatment of theory and an exclusive focus on applications. Vanderbei provides a very readable explanation of fundamental theoretical results in linear programming, yet he also provides meaningful and insightful applications of the theory. In contrast to many other linear programming texts, Vanderbei effectively treats both the "why" and the "how."
Here's a brief guide to the book. Part One of the text is sufficient for readers who want to gain a basic understanding of linear programming theory and how to solve linear programming problems via the simplex method. Part Two discusses network-type problems, an important problem class on which linear programming methods have proven invaluable in solving industrial-sized problems. Part Three introduces the motivated reader to interior-point methods, a more recent class of algorithms for solving linear programming problems. This section effectively summarizes key research in interior-point methods, an area in which the author is an expert. Part Four demonstrates how Parts One, Two, and Three can be applied in a more general sense to solve convex programming problems.

As an instructor who uses this book to teach MBA students, I consider this as a valuable resource.
However, I am concerned that too many examples have been put together, without much intuition and insights in what justifies the models used for the simulation and how to effectively design the simulation.
As a result, student learns how to produce results for certain cases, but they don't know how to adjust it if assumptions change.

Easy to understand and to the point--and without any jargon--PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT SCIENCE uses an active-learning approach and realistic problems to help you understand and take advantage of the power of spreadsheet modeling. With real examples and problems drawn from finance, marketing, and operations research, you'll easily come to see how management science applies to your chosen profession and how you can use it on the job. The authors emphasize modeling over algebraic formulations and memorization of particular models. The CD-ROMs packaged with every new book include the following useful add-ins: the Palisade Decision Tools Suite (@RISK, StatTools, PrecisionTree, TopRank, and RISKOptimizer); Solver Table, which allows you to do sensitivity analysis; and Premium Solver for Education from Frontline Systems. All of these add-ins have been revised for Excel 2007.

Linear and Nonlinear Programming (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) Review

I have profitably used the book to apply constrained minimization procedures in the field of computational contact mechanics. I think it is not a secret that quite often books on mathematics are written from matematicians for matematicians. Hence it is quite hard for engineers both to read and to extract valuable information from them. With this respect this book is a shining star. It presents the topics in a very precise but clear and understandable way. Moreover the notation also is the best compromise between coinciseness and clarity. Matematicians, please, look at this book and follow such style; we engineer desperately need to communicate with you.

This is by far the best book on the topic I have found. If you plan to design or model any vehicle, but in particular a hybrid or electric vehicle, I recommend you own this book.
Specifically, a large portion of the mathematical models required for design-level calculations are available directly from the text. The text is very concise, making good use of external citations to remain thorough. Finally, the optimization case studies are very helpful in understanding hybrid design goals.
Highly Recommended for engineers and students with some experience in vehicles.

Introduction to Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engine Systems Review

Introduction to Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engine Systems

To take full advantage of this book you need a good background in control theory (mandatory!) and mechanics. The book has excellent information about the variables, approximations and all the stuff relating to gasoline and diesel engines. If you need a more in depth understanding of the principles sometimes explained superficially in "tunning engines books", this is the literature you need, but please have close to you a "mechanics for dummies" in case you get lost with the formulas.
This book has some references to an ECU's software guidelines but no program example is presented.
The drawbacks: in some figures the letters are missing or misplaced making them a quiz.

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation Review

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Managing Business Complexity' is a great start at bridging the significant academic work in complexity science over recent years to business applications. It provides an introduction to agent-based simulations and an overview of the characteristics and advantages of agents, and walks the reader through two illustrative examples. Such examples are especially helpful to readers with little or no previous experience using agent-based models.
Applications of complexity science to business are still in their infancy. As such, the discussion in the book leans towards the academic, and more pointedly towards programmers rather than business practitioners with scant scientific background. Future editions of this book might benefit from including further business applications, and including the impact to bottom line.
This book is highly recommended as an overview of this exciting subject and its applicability to business situations.

Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), a way to simulate a large number of choices by individual actors, is one of the most exciting practical developments in business modeling since the invention of relational databases. It represents a new way to understand data and generate information that has never been available before--a way for businesses to view the future and to understand and anticipate the likely effects of their decisions on their markets and industries. It thus promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that businesses in many areas use computers to support practical decision-making.Managing Business Complexity is the first complete business-oriented agent-based modeling and simulation resource. It has three purposes: first, to teach readers how to think about ABMS, that is, about agents and their interactions; second, to teach readers how to explain the features and advantages of ABMS to other people and third, to teach readers how to actually implement ABMS by building agent-based simulations. It is intended to be a complete ABMS resource, accessible to readers who haven't had any previous experience in building agent-based simulations, or any other kinds of models, for that matter. It is also a collection of ABMS business applications resources, all assembled in one place for the first time. In short, Managing Business Complexity addresses who needs ABMS and why, where and when ABMS can be applied to the everyday business problems that surround us, and how specifically to build these powerful agent-based models.
