Software architecture really is unlike any other aspect of its design. The architecture has deeper meaning and larger scale than any other aspect, and can't be discussed in the same ways.
This book opens that discussion. Among the "architecture" books I've read lately, this is the only one to offer concrete advice on describing, presenting, and analyzing archtiectural features of a system. It identifies a number of documentation types and variations. It also identifies a number of different readers - developers, future architects, users, etc. - and addresses their different documentation needs.
The authors use a little UML, but not a lot. For one thing, standard UML works at too low a level for architectural discussion. Classes, and even hierarchies of class inheritance are such fine-grained entities that architecture gernerally won't address them. Instead, the authors offer a number of diagramming styles of their own. For once, I agree with the need for non-standard notation.
Even so, I think they under-utilize the existing standards in favor of their own terminology and notation. They could have used a UML profile for lots of the discussion. It would have had to be a new profile, however, not just a force-fit of the real-time profile. They also under-used the existing architecture standards (IEEE/ANSI, DoD, NASA, and more) in favor of their own discussion. Maybe their approach can be used in any of those frameworks, but that should have been more explicit.
I see only one major flaw in this book, the assumption that a software system's architecture describes the program delivered to a customer. That's way too narrow. A large system includes things like test harnesses, debug instrumentation, application-specific QA tools, and user documentation of many kinds. Those can be major undertakings of their own. They are intimately tied to the delivered software, and may constrain the actual product.
On the postivie side, this book offer an extensive real-world case study. That probably doubles the book's value, by putting a concrete face on the otherwise abstract discussion.
There are two ways to use this book: you can agree with it, or think about it and disagree with it. If you really think about it, though, you get it's full value whether you agree or not.
In other words, you can't lose by reading this book.

All of the reviews on this book are generally consistent in their praise for the book and the authors. I do not have any points to add to the discussion other than this:
It is a credit to this version of Statistics for Experimenters that it has remained relevant throughout the years as a classic introductory text that has kept selling consistently since it was released in the 1970's. Nevertheless, unless you have a particular reason for purchasing this version, you should purchase the updated version(also available through Amazon).
The full title of the newer edition is:
Statistics for Experimenters: Design, Innovation, and Discovery, 2nd Edition
The 2nd edition, written in the same engaging and readable style as the 1st, contains virtually all of the content of the 1st edition plus advances in design of experiments that have happened since the 1st edition was published.

We are writing this review of the book as our response as authors to the other review posted on this page. This book is intended to be an introductory text for students and beginners of Mechanics of Composite Materials. The presentation is simple and brief. Furthermore, it is accompanied by a CD-ROM that has numerous MATLAB functions that can be used to do the basic calculations in this subject. And we stress that we emphasize the basic calculations with no attempt to introduce advanced topics.
It is true that the calculations in this book could also be done using EXCEL. However, it is not straightforward and very difficult to perform some of these calculations in EXCEL. In fact, EXCEL is not designed to handle matrices and matrix operations like MATLAB. The choice of MATLAB for this book is based on the fact that MATLAB is a Matrix Laboratory - it was specifically designed to handle matrices and matrix operations. And we know that these types of calculations are exactly those encountered in Mechanics of Composite Materials. Thus MATLAB and not EXCEL is the right choice for this kind of book.
The subject of damage initiation is mentioned briefly in a short chapter at the end of the book. Indeed this is an advanced topic that is not normally covered in texts on Mechanics of Composite Materials. The most popular books on Mechanics of Composite Materials (like the books of Kaw, Jones, Gibson, etc) do not even mention this advanced topic. The only book that we are aware of that shows some discussion of damage initiation is the book by Herakovich - but this is the exception not the rule. We have included a short chapter on damage initiation solely to introduce the subject and guide the reader where to find additional detailed information. Furthermore, we as authors have written another book especially on the topic on damage initiation in composite materials. The book is entitled "Advances in Damage Mechanics: Metals and Metal Matrix Composites" by Voyiadjis and Kattan, Second Edition, published by Elsevier in 2006. The interested reader may refer to this advanced book for details on damage initiation in composite materials.
We have included another short chapter on homogenization at the end of the book. Again this is an advanced topic that is not normally covered in other books on Mechanics of Composite Materials. We have included this short and brief chapter to introduce the topic and guide the reader where to find further information. The interested reader will have to look into advanced specialized books on homogenization such as the book by Nemat-Nasser. He will not find this information in any competing books on Mechanics of Composite Materials.
We feel that we are fully justified in leaving out the detailed presentation of these advanced topics of this book. Again, the book is intended for students and beginners who do not seek these advanced topics in an introductory book like ours. Finally, we should note that we included the complete Solutions Manual to most of the problems in the book at the end of the book and also on the accompanying CD-ROM. The rest of the book is a printout of the Solutions Manual which some people may erroneously perceive as MATLAB output.

This book is far superior to any other ANSYS FE book. It has something like 40 examples and the cd includes the batch input files. Other books on the subject (see Moaeveni) lack the # of example problems or batch file processing tutorials. Great for beginers and intermediate users who want to get the most out of ANSYS.

This book fills an interesting niche in the field. Large antennas and large telescope structures are very similar, and the fundamental approaches used to understand their performance are the same. The author does a commendable job of presenting the necessary information in a clear and understandable way; let down slightly by a few typos and some slightly weak error checking and editing (this book is not cheap - this sort of thing should be picked up in the proofing) - but despite this it is well worth the money.
I work for a large telescope project and this book is worth purchasing simply to get the perspective of an experienced practitioner in the field, and to see common questions ('Is a velocity loop really necessary?') comprehensively yet compactly addressed. Overall, an interesting and worthwhile book - would that more engineers in the field could - and would - produce something similar. The discipline would be the richer for it.

This is by far the best book on the topic I have found. If you plan to design or model any vehicle, but in particular a hybrid or electric vehicle, I recommend you own this book.
Specifically, a large portion of the mathematical models required for design-level calculations are available directly from the text. The text is very concise, making good use of external citations to remain thorough. Finally, the optimization case studies are very helpful in understanding hybrid design goals.
Highly Recommended for engineers and students with some experience in vehicles.

This book is an absolutely fantastic guide to all aspects of structural finite element analysis, with short sections on thermal and other disciplines. It can be described as a book on how to REALLY use FEA - an appropriate level of theory is discussed, and then the author provides a very lucrative discussion of actually using FEA to model real-world systems. Pitfalls, how elements can or cannot actually model structures, and generally good FEA practise are discussed. If you want to know what you're doing using FEA and have an engineering background, you want this book.

Good book. Covers all the basics of environmental science. I had a class with Dr. Ramaswami, one of the authors. From what I understand each author wrote different parts of the book, but it flows very well. It's definitely one of the better reference books I had to read in graduate school.

is well written and understandable to
readers with the basic signal processing and programming
background.
The reader can refresh/improve the knowledge of
some basic control theory material, while at the
same time learns how to apply Scilab/Scicos at simulation and
modeling problems.
I worked with Matlab for many years before and I found
Scilab/Scicos a very powerful alternative to Matlab/Simulink
and is free!
I recommend strongly this book to any scientist/engineer that
plans to explore the benefits of the excellent open
source Scilab/Scicos environment.

To take full advantage of this book you need a good background in control theory (mandatory!) and mechanics. The book has excellent information about the variables, approximations and all the stuff relating to gasoline and diesel engines. If you need a more in depth understanding of the principles sometimes explained superficially in "tunning engines books", this is the literature you need, but please have close to you a "mechanics for dummies" in case you get lost with the formulas.
This book has some references to an ECU's software guidelines but no program example is presented.
The drawbacks: in some figures the letters are missing or misplaced making them a quiz.

This book is probably the best ever written on the subject. In other words, the content is really 1st class.
However, the print quality is so poor that I wonder how Anderson and Woessner or their 'managers' did ever even think about letting Elsevier do the print. It looks like something that come out of a fax machine. The figures are difficult to read. Grey-scales in figures have turned into slightly different tones of just black, and sometimes you need the Academic Press print of 1992 to fully understand the figures. The layout of tables that run over two or more pages have been altered to become inlogic compared to the Academic Press print version. Also the letters of the bulk text lacks reader friendliness. My advise is to look for the book printed by academic press and not by Elsevier.

I purchased this book in 2009 because it was a required textbook for an Environmental Engineering graduate course I took. It is written well enough that a person with a technical background can read it once in most cases, and then be able to apply its methods to solve problems. It is fairly well organized, although we did not get through the entire text in the course I took.
