Design of Enterprise Systems is simple and straight to the point. The information provided is well documented and summarized. The author provides various examples which give you a solid base to understand the concepts thoroughly. At the end of each chapter there are concept and exercise questions that will help you verify your knowledge of the subject matter. The only thing missing in this book is that the exercise problems do not include potential solutions. While I do understand that Designing an Enterprise System depends on the problem and point of view of the observer, having a general guide to answering the exercises would have been helpful.
From my point of view, this book was designed well for students; guiding them step-by-step through different topics. For professionals, the book also stands as a useful reference guide.
This books includes the following chapters: Enterprise Engineering, systems theory, modeling concepts, Enterprise design methodology, Enterprise architecture, Enterprise analysis and design methodology, strategy, problem formulation and requirements, generate and evaluate alternatives, process modeling, queuing theory, process design, information modeling, information design, organization design, enterprise technology and integration.
I highly recommend it for anyone studying enterprise systems. However, if you are new to this topic the only problem would be the lack of answers to the exercise questions.

As a university teacher of strategic corporate finance and optimal investment, I have watched the financial industry analytics transcend hand calculation with financial calculators to financial modeling with spreadsheet software. Depending on whether the financial specialty is in corporate or banking/brokerage, the job skills requirement can range from corporate cost control to optimal portfolio design. In watching the analytics development within the financial industry, I have repeatedly witnessed students with financial modeling skills obtain jobs that are typically reserved for specialists holding advanced degrees or having multiple years of experience.
My course design typically takes the form of a strategic analysis class in either corporate financial planning or investment issues. Optimal corporate financing affects optimal investments. Additionally, since my research interests are in international corporate finance, global finance themes surface in most lectures. In corporate finance, raising funds on favorable terms and then allocating those funds efficiently among various projects are decisions made by every company financial officer-in every country; in investment, fund managers face global choices. Thus, business is no longer exclusively domestic ventures. It is because of this that I would like to see a global analysis chapter added in the next revision of both of Dr. Benninga's textbooks. Business, and the financing of business, is global-even at the principles level.
Statement: There is not an employer on the planet who will care that you can solve a time-value-of-money problem using a hand-held calculator. Real world financial applications require spreadsheet analysis.
CORPORATE:
Companies are increasingly requiring sophisticated modeling skills from financial specialists. Logic in today's business environment calls for constant surveillance of possible global funding sources in an optimal growth strategy. There is no better way to do this than through financial modeling using the business spreadsheet standard-Excel.

I think Fishman's book is one of the best introduction to Monte Carlo methods, simulation and pseudo-random number generation. It is also a great reference. However if one is interested in the history of Monte Carlo including its early development in particle physics I recommen the old monograph by Hammersley and Handscomb which also does a great job at introducing the various variance reduction techniques. This is an aspect of the Monte Carlo method that Fishman does not address. It was more important in the days when computers were slow but it still has applications with certain intensive modern computing problems such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo.

This book gives what seems like a reasonably good description of each of the three OMT models: object, functional and dynamic. Unfortunately, when attempting to use the ideas presented, one becomes immediately aware that no explanation of how to use all three models together is given.
Looking at the examples, one finds that the examples in each model's section are totally unrelated to the examples in the other two model's sections. Essentially, the authors have fabricated example systems for each section that are easy to describe using that particular model, but have failed to show the other two models for those systems. This book would have been far better if the same set of examples were carried through the three types of models, showing how they interrelate.
The primary problem with the book, however, seems to be that it's about OMT. OMT has many serious flaws. OMT's object model notation is reasonable. The functional model notation is satisfactory. The dynamic model is incomplete. And the three models are not related to eachother in any clear way by this book. Without fixing the flaws inherent in OMT, any book on OMT is going to be mostly useless.

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Many of the problems in previous editions were deleted or updated, and a number of brand new problems were added for relevance to current statistical analysis. A problem guide is available to instructors showing the context of each of the "data" problems, and it also shows the correspondence between problems in this edition and problems in the previous edition.
The previous edition's Chapter 4 is renamed Chapter 17, "Importing Data into Excel," and is completely rewritten with its section on Excel tables located in Chapter 2. (Previous edition chapters 5-17 were renumbered 4-16.)
The book is still based on Excel 2007, but notes about changes in Excel 2010 have been added where they apply. Specifically, there is a small section on the new slicers for pivot tables, and there are several mentions of the new statistical functions (although the old functions still work).
Each chapter now has 10-20 more consistent and relevant "Conceptual Questions" in the end-of-chapter sections.
The first two linear programming examples in Chapter 13 (replacing the former Chapter 14) are replaced by two product mix models, where the second builds on the first. The previous "diet" model was overly complex as a first linear programming example.
Several chapter-opening vignettes are replaced with newer and more interesting ones and there are now many short "fundamental insights" throughout the chapters. These insights are designed to allow the students to step back from the details and see the really important ideas.
All updated screenshots and accompanying explanations to reflect Excel 2007 and updated add-ins. Tips on Excel 2010 have been added where applicable. This edition now provides access to Excel add-in software via an access code to a Premium Online Content Website for every student purchasing a new book.
Instructors' Resource CD: PowerPoints, and Solutions, Case, and Example files have been updated to reflect the core text 4th edition. The Test Bank has been updated with new questions and is now offered in ExamView testing software.

I bought this book because it is mandatory reading material for a course which I am taking. So far, I like the book and I find it easy to follow. The book provides good practical examples and the publisher's companion site provides a download of all major spreadsheets which are used as examples in the text. The one problem which I have had so far is that I have not been able to download Oracle's Crystal Ball trial software which is supposed to be provided as a companion to the book. The user name and password combination provided with the book does not match what is requested on the download website.

The introduction to the book starts with an interesting phrase "The difference between "theory" and "practice" is that in theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is." The authors like to apply this statement to UML modeling, and continue later saying, in theory, everything in UML is useful, but in practice, a whole lot of people and projects need to know how to drive an OO software design from use cases.
Use Case Driven Object Modeling with UML-Theory and Practice shows how to take an object-oriented software design from use case all the way through coding and testing, based on the minimalist, UML-based ICONIX process. The authors focus on one simple question, "how do you get from use cases to code?". The authors are real experts on the ICONIX process. This book is for Beginners as well as for advanced programmers. Beginners will learn a powerful methodology, Use-Case Driven Object Modeling. On the other hand, advance developers can apply Use Case to their preferred methodology.
The authors break down the design of an Internet bookstore, which involves showing many common mistakes, and then showing the relevant pieces of the model with their mistakes corrected. What really makes this book unique is the fact that you, the reader, get to correct the mistakes.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone that uses Excel on a daily basis for business analysis or for MBA students. Early in the introduction, Dr. Gottlieb promises that if you use Excel for 10 hours a week or more, this book will save you hundreds of hours per year. He delivers!
You don't need to build an excel spreadsheet to calculate that this book is worth many times its cover price to users of excel. Even if you are a "power user" you will quiclky find tips that will make you more efficient.
I was fortunate enough to take an Excel class from Dr. Gottlieb a few years ago during the "crash math course" week while getting an MBA at Columbia University. I don't want to offend any of my esteemed professors, but those few hours with Dr. Gottlieb were probably more useful than several of my semester-long courses to me. I currently use Excel for 3-4 hours per day to analyze stocks at my hedge fund and his tips have saved me hours and helped to make my graphical representation of data look top-notch.
This book is not a basic "how-to" or "for dummies" book on Excel. It is the perfect book for you if you use Excel frequently, but are frustrated that you have to perform certain repetitive keystrokes or clicks to get it do what you want. Perhaps you want your charts to look better. Maybe you didn't even know that you could have custom lists built in, for example, instead of manually entering FQ01, FQ02, etc. You can add trend lines to graphs; you can format parts of graphs differently than other parts. You can name cells, groups of cells to make your work easier.
Dr. Gottlieb exposes the many keystroke shortcuts that can make your daily grind with Excel less laborious. His book is laid out in a very concise, neat organization. I think the best way to really benefit from it is to power through entire sections that apply to your work and try his examples. He provides some problems at the end of each chapter (he is in academia, after all) but mercifully; he provides the answers, too!
This book is only about 280 pages long, but don't let that fool you, if you compare it to some other Excel books with 800 pages. He has more time-saving information in it than books 2 or 3 times as long. The beauty of his book is everything he shows is something an analyst using Excel in the real world actually uses it for. He is not just running through every menu, detailing every useless capability of Excel, like the other books.
This is the key advantage to Dr. Gottlieb's book. He has a list of over 50,000 people that he sends his "tip of the month" to and they (like me) are not shy about emailing him questions. This gives him keen insight into what real Excel jockeys are interested in, and he addresses those issues in this book. Get it today and you will discover many things that Excel can do for you, in a much easier way than you are using it today!

I was a graduate student of Professor Guerrero at The College of William and Mary and have to recommend this book. For those unfortunates who did not have him as an instructor, this is a book that gives you the experience of spending time with him in the classroom. The practical application of Excel as a modeling and simulation tool is delivered in a conversational style that engages the reader and occasionally generates a chuckle. Yes, a chuckle in a text that includes the words Excel, Modeling and Simulation in the title. However, inbetween the chuckles is solid theory and application. It's a clever text.
I would recommend this book if only for the discussion of the feng shui of worksheet development - as users, we sometimes don't think through the design of the excel workbook. We build and link, build and link, build and link...

This book takes time to adjust to the crowded typesetting first. Then it gets more interesting as you read more of it. The authors know the subject in depth as well as breath. One problem I have with my students is that many of them do not have the quantitative background required of the book, but the level of the book is what we should aim for in the future. We have to raise the level of our education. The book is well written except for some expected typos for a new edition.

Since Lotus 1-2-3 burst onto the scene almost thirty years ago, spreadsheet software has been a vital tool in aiding business decision-making. There are many books offering instruction in learning to use a spreadsheet. Some books promise to teach business processes but end up delivering a course on basic spreadsheeting with only a passing nod to the business processes the student was expecting to learn.
This fine book actually delivers the goods. First and foremost, it is a solid text on decision analysis in business management. It teaches the student on how to model optimization problems and solve them using linear programming. It covers sensitivity analysis and the simplex method, network modeling, integer linear programming, goal programming and multiple objective optimization, non-linear programming and evolutionary optimization, regression analysis, discriminant analysis, time series forecasting, introduces simulation, queuing theory, project management, and concludes with a chapter devoted to decision analysis. This final chapter covers both probabilistic and non-probabilistic methods, the expected value of imperfect information, decision trees, analyzing risk in a decision tree, computing conditional probabilities, and finally, utility theory.
What is wonderfully useful about this book is that it teaches these important principles of business decision making by turning them into practical tools using Excel spreadsheets. It not only shows the reader (student) how to build the spreadsheet, it also does the important task of teaching the WHY of the tool, not just the how.
It is clearly written, is laid out logically, and comes across as supportive of the student trying to learn this material.
Included in this book are 2 CDs. Included are: an advanced Solver, a 140 day trial of the Crystal Ball software, which will limit your use of it to the term you first study the material, but won't be of use to you unless you buy the software. The same goes for the 120-day trial of Microsoft Project. It is great to be introduced to these tools, but once you have invested time learning them, you will need to make other investments to keep using them. This is OK with me; I just think you ought to know that up front.
I think this is a fine text and could be the foundation of a very useful course.

Simon Benninga's 3rd Edition of Financial Modelling with Excel is the single most useful book for finance students and professionals ever published and continues to offer an outstanding reference and textbook for students and practitioners of applied finance.
For further information, please use the "Look Inside" feature and examine the Table of Contents carefully, because I will emphasize selected portions.
It is difficult to overstate how useful and practical and helpful this work is for a wide audience and Financial Modelling is the single finance book I recommend for everyone after they have taken (or read themselves) Introductory Finance.
For those looking for "one-stop-shopping" for models that resemble those of professional financial analysts then there is no better value than Benninga's FM3.
Benninga's FM3 is a coal-face work for those who must make financial decisions using models. There are further specialist texts in topics covered here (credit modelling, portfolio construction, option pricing), but the models in FM3 are the first advanced models applied to loans, bonds, options, and equity portfolios. Master these and then specialized texts are easier to digest.
"Cookbook" metaphors are too strong and do not do this work justice, for Financial Modelling 3rd (FM3) is not a mere collection of recipes but rather topical introduction, explanation, and then direct technique.
If we can make a comparison with a "cookbook" then FM3 falls somewhere between "The Joy of Cooking" and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." "Joy" combines chapters on technique, ingredients, and tools with dense pages of endless recipes, whereas "Mastering" emphasises technique and a few well-selected recipes.
The welcome new chapters cover bank valuation, the Black-Litterman approach to portfolio optimization, and Monte Carlo methods and applications to option pricing, and the previous 2nd edition's small chapter on using array functions and formulas has been expanded. The chapter on data downloads from YAHOO is also welcome, especially for those on a budget.
There is a single significant flaw in the work, which is excusable and redeemable. Far too often the discounting in the chapters is done over a flat interest rate curve. While the term structure of interest rates is covered, and historical term structures and parallel shifts and steepening and flattening is covered in isolation in a thorough chapter and with wonderful data files, the necessity and explicit connection of discounting from an appropriate yield curve is left implied and only mentioned in a few exercises. I would have preferred a "round up" chapter where each of the subjects treated (bond discounting, portfolio expected returns, options, etc.) under a yield curve with advanced models. Sure BLOOMBERG and REUTERS have these sort of things (often incorrectly) programmed, but students need to learn explicitly about them and do the exercise themselves to comprehend the importance of curve discounting.
The CD attached in the back of the book is alone worth the price, with over two score of models that are practical and adaptable for students and professionals alike. The files are stored and separated according to chapters and subject matter. Each file has logical progression of the concepts advanced in the book, and each separate sheet either stands alone or appropriately links to data and models on other sheets, so editing for your own purposes is a breeze.
For those who want to train themselves in Finance (not "personal finance") then I suggest reading Copeland, Weston, & Shastri's Financial Theory and Corporate Policy (4th Edition) and Brealey, Myers, and Marcus's "Corporate Finance" and "Investments" followed by working through FM3. Such a course would give any self-disciplined person the equivalent of a Masters of Science in Finance.
