Forecasting Oracle Performance Review

Forecasting Oracle Performance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a book about Oracle Performance tuning. This is a book about Oracle Performance Forecasting. This should be evident after carefully reading the book.
Good books, like good professionals, are rare. This is why I have developed a tendency to choose carefully before buying one and, in the Oracle area in particular, I can smell the author's intellectual honesty and trustworthiness from the first page.
Forecasting Oracle Performance is one of those. I enjoyed the fluid style and closeness of the author. I enjoyed the simplicity and clarity, almost reminding me of Wittgenstein's famous quote ("everything that can be said can be said clearly"). I also enjoyed these short touches of humanism (cf Erlang Krarup's life).
On the forecasting subject, I liked the book construction and the quality of the examples.
Chapter 1 gives a landscape picture of Oracle forecasting and puts the reader in scope and context.
Chapter 2 introduces the reader to the basics of forecasting and the basic concepts over which the book is built: Transactions, response time, arrival time and basic formulas are described here.
Chapter 3 shows the limits of basic forecasting (essential formulas) and the problem of baseline and model selection. It shows how to increase forecasting precision with ErlangC or weighted averages. Most importantly, it shows why it is essential to understand the concepts and implications of the application of a given formula, model or method. The author is very careful in the choice of terms and always clears potential ambiguities. Those who know how difficult it can be to forecast will appreciate it.
Chapter 4 introduces to statistics applied to forecasting.
Chapter 5, on practical queuing theory, is probably the biggest chapter of the book. After a brief introduction to queuing theory, Little's law and Kendall notation, this chapter provides such a diverse set of examples (27!) making the topic very intuitive to non-specialists.
Chapters 6 & 7 describe forecasting methodology and workload characterization. The first describes the steps across a solid performance forecasting methodology, from the initial question to the actual forecast. The second deals with workload characterization: how to get system and Oracle data, how to choose the source and peak. It describes the workload modelling and the risks of data collection.
Chapters 8 and 9 are about models: ratio and linear regression models. They describe their respective foundations, limitations and advantages. Each chapter also contain several examples and case studies to illustrate the subject.
The last chapter deals with scalability models and their relationship with forecasting models.
Overall, I found this book very useful. You will find additional resources at the author's website (there is also a discussion forum on forecasting). The errata page is always up-to-date and some examples have even been extended. Great work!

Craig Shallahamer's Forecasting Oracle Performance is the first, Oracle-specific book to provide database administrators with help in forecasting future performance of new and existing database systems. Most (if not all) Oracle performance optimization books on the market today focus on troubleshooting acute problems such as a poorly performing report. The other side of the coin however, lies in forecasting: Will the current hardware last the year? What happens when we merge the employees from a newly acquired company? Will the current system keep up with the demands of a new application? These are strategic questions that database administrators are expected to answer. Until now, there has been no book to help them.Of all the problems that an Oracle database administrator has to worry about, those dealing with performance often provoke the most stress, thus providing the greatest impetus for administrators to seek help in the form of books. This book shows administrators how to create a model of a database system. Different types of models are introduced: mathematical, simulation, benchmark. Administrators learn how to create the right model for the risks they seek to mitigate. They learn to validate their model. They learn to interpret the results in the form of a forecast. This book gives administrators the knowledge they need to confidently work with business management in preparing for the future of their systems.

I read this book straight through last weekend. I could barely put it down. This book really hits home for anyone involved in the fashion industry. I have been involved in fashion for more than 20 years. It's about time someone was brave enough to expose some of the bad dealings of the industry. Hopefully, Mr. Halperin's startling revelations will help make more people aware that it's important to beware of who you get involved with in this business. There are many bad apples out there. I encourage all parents and young models to pick up this book before getting involved in the industry. All your questions of what it's like to be a model and how to choose the right agent will be answered. And of course, you'll be intrigued by some of the horrific experiences some of the top models you see on TV have encountered. The author posed undercover as a model to get all the dirt. And he certainly does not hold back in revealing the truth about our glamorous industry.

Automatic Control Systems Review

Automatic Control Systems
Average Reviews:

I had to use this book for my last semester in electrical engineering. It is really interesting, well explained and complete for a concise introduction about control engineering and design of controllers.
All you need to follow the text are basic notions in engineer's mathematics (a bit of calculus and algebra). A few chapters offer reviews of important notions (transfert functions, state variable modeling, differential equations, ...) Then, you get to the essential, control theory.
The book is well divided. First chapters cover mathematical notions you have to master in order to succeed in the next part (signal flow diagrams, block diagrams, a bit of mechanic). Then, a few chapters introduce control loops, poles and zeros interpretation (explained very well with a lot of graphs examples). A single chapter covers root loci drawing. Great explanations about controllers are complete and easy to understand. The last chapter is kept for design only with A LOT of examples for PID, phase-lag, filters, etc.
Emphasis is made on computer design with examples all along the book. The CD included offers a few useful tools to use for design with Matlab.
The author knows his subject more than anyone else. He has good experience in design and the text is well written. A must for anyone studying the subject.

I have just completed the JHU program in Systems Engineering. This book is the foundation for the curriculum and is a very readable, solid overview of Systems Engineering. All phases of the system life-cycle are introduced and tied together to truly illustrate the process. The book focuses on processes, the tools used will change, but good Systems Engineering will stay the same. The process to derive good requirements that are able to be implemented and tested are the same regardless of technology or field.

Swarm Intelligence: Introduction and Applications (Natural Computing Series) Review

Swarm Intelligence: Introduction and Applications (Natural Computing Series)
Average Reviews:

This collection of academic papers maintains the high standards I expect from Springer, but leaves a disjointed feel. Referring to the table of contents, there are eight papers, divided between "Introduction" (half of the book) and "Applications". The four papers in Part 1 are nice, extensive surveys. Two of these, (3-4), are sufficiently specific to suggest relabeling to "Applications", leaving only two papers of broad interest. If I were a Springer marketer, I might wonder whether specialists doing research in the subjects of (3-8) would need the book, to complement the sources they already have. I myself came to it with an interest in optimization, and (a) found (2) to be a nice survey of ACO and PSO - but, again, a survey, so I would need to go to the referenced papers to see the implementation - but (b) discovered that "dynamic optimization" in (6) was not what's usually meant by the term.

Reading first 100 pages, even the complexity science is not clear to me. I think the book talked too much around without clarifying the key idea. Also it contains awful repetition of same things. Perhaps, I have expected too much from a book of such title.

Modelling Fixed Income Securities and Interest Rate Options (2nd Edition) Review

Modelling Fixed Income Securities and Interest Rate Options (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a must for any financial engineer interested in learning the HMJ model of interest-rate instruments. The HMJ model is an arbitrage model based on the instaneous forward rates. The book starts with a brief introduction to fixed-income securities followed by a rigorous treatment of binomial trees. Claim replication is then addressed through trading strategies. The instruments treated are coupon bonds, forward, futures, options and exotics. I found useful to derive the mathematical statements as I was reading the book to acquaint myself with the notation and the mathematical concepts. The beauty of the model is worth the effort. It would have been nice to include a more thorough treatment of mortage-backed securities and derivatives subject to default. Other models ( Ho-Lee , Hull-White , Vasicek ) are also briely mentioned. The parameter estimation also deserved more space since a correct estimation is more important to pricing than a clever choice of the model. To conclude: a recommended introduction to HJM + additional readings will allow the financial engineer to grasp the fundamentals of the fixed-income universe.

This book teaches the basics of fixed-income securities in a way that, unlike competitive texts, requires a minimum of prerequisites. While other books focus heavily on institutional details of the bond market, all of which could easily be learned "on the job," Jarrow is more concerned with presenting a coherent theoretical framework for understanding all basic models. His unified approach-the Heath Jarrow Morton model-under which all other models are presented as special cases, enhances understanding while avoiding repetition. The author's pricing model is widely used in today's securities industry. In this revised edition, the author has added new chapters to enrich coverage, and has modified the order of chapters slightly to smooth the progression of material from simple to complex.Online material will be available with the text, replacing the diskette included in the first edition; lecture notes for instructors will be available on PowerPoint slides.MathWorks has provided a free online, limited version of the MATLAB's financial derivatives toolbox, with which users of the book can apply the theory presented in each chapter.

Simulation with Arena w/ CD-Rom Review

Simulation with Arena w/ CD-Rom
Average Reviews:

While this book does have some useful content from the couple chapters I have read, the material is overshadowed by a serious problem - this is almost not readable in the literal sense.
There is something about the small font size and presentation that makes reading the book tough on the eyes, even with a bright light. I read a lot and this is one of the worst presentations I have seen. The other students in the class who I talked with about this textbook also had the same comment. For a book that charges over $100, this is inexcusable.
Unless you want to wind up with a pair of glasses sooner than you think or get a stronger prescription than you have now, avoid this book.

Business Data Networks and Telecommunications (5th Edition) Review

Business Data Networks and Telecommunications (5th Edition)

We used this book in my graduate MIS course, and it was a great tool for learning the basics about data communications and networking. Many of my classmates thought that Panko did a great job of explaining data comm concepts, whether it was something as simple as an ethernet LAN, or as complex as an ATM network. Everyone in my class seemed to enjoy the text (both highly technical students with a background in data comms, and students who were learning the material for the first time).
The book is designed to give readers a general overview of a subject, then drill down into the details in later chapters. He starts with the basics (layers, encapsulation, protocols, etc), and then gets into how networks are built from the ground up. Panko has included numerous modules at the end of the book if you want to learn even more about a specific topic.
The author has also put together slides for each chapter which were very helpful in explaining difficult concepts, or emphasizing certain chapters in the text. If you can get a copy of them, I highly recommend using them.
I recommend this book for anyone looking for a way to learn a lot about data communications and networking. This book covers the gamut from LAN to WAN technology, packet switching, ATM networks, frames, IP addresses, etc. It can also serve as a tremendous reference if you need to review a topic later on down the road.

Adaptive Filtering: Algorithms and Practical Implementation Review

Adaptive Filtering: Algorithms and Practical Implementation

The book by Prof. Diniz is indeed amongst the best on adaptive signal processing. Most of the fundamental concepts are well explained, suitable examples are given and practical applications are also discussed. The chapter on adaptive IIR filters is unique and still cannot be found in any other book. Moreover, solutions to the problems can be obtained by ftp, which is something very useful for students. Despite this is an excellent book (5 star), the price is ridiculous, as occurs with most titles from this publisher. If I were Prof. Diniz I would change from Kluwer Academic Publishers to a more competitive publisher.

This book gives a state-of-the-art overview of modeling growth and form of marine sessile organisms - such as stromatolites, algae, and metazoans including stony corals, hydrocorals, octocorals, and sponges -, using large-scale computing techniques, scientific visualization, methods for analyzing 2D and 3D forms, and particle-based modeling techniques. It originates from the workshop on Modeling Growth and Form of Marine Sessile Organisms, held at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Santa Barbara, California, August 1999. Experts from various disciplines including developmental biology, ecology, computer science, physics and mathematics, who have research interests in modeling the development of these organisms have been invited to contribute. The book describes all the steps required to develop and experimentally validate morphological models including collecting biological information and methods for specifying and comparing forms. Examples are given of how models are currently being applied to simulate growth and form of marine sessile organisms. Potential applications of growth models and morphological analyses in modern and paleo-bio-monitoring, the detection of environmental change, and the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems and aquaculture are addressed. The combination of simulation models with laboratory and field experiments provides a powerful tool to obtain insights on how the growth forms of marine organisms emerge from physical, genetic and environmental influences.

Artificial Life Models in Software Review

Artificial Life Models in Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Remember Conway's Game of Life? Surely you must, if you are interested in this book. The Game has been around since the 70s. The editors have cultivated recent research papers that demonstrate how far the field has advanced. Reinforced by some pretty colour plates that depict artificial entities [dare we call them living?] in some surroundings. These include the modelling of bee flights through a garden, and simulated trajectories of a group of bacteria.
Nor is the Game of Life ignored. One plate shows it in three dimensions. The Game is played in 2 dimensions, with time as the third dimension. An obvious choice that gives interesting trajectories of the cells.
The narrative adds to the illustrations. By describing a variety of computer simulations [worlds?]. Where the experimenter can tweak many parameters, and watch her world unfold. Some worlds are impressively rich in complexity of observed behaviours.
The only drawback in the book is its skimpy index. A mere two pages. It should have been more detailed.

The Lady Anatomist: The Life and Work of Anna Morandi Manzolini Review

The Lady Anatomist: The Life and Work of Anna Morandi Manzolini
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the gothic thriller _The Mysteries of Udolpho_ (1794), the mysteries consist of distinguishing the real from the supernatural, and one of the scary visions seen by the heroine Emily was a body in grave clothes, being eaten by worms. She really saw it, and the author reflects, "On such an object, it will be readily believed, that no person could endure to look twice." Is it a horrific supernatural vision, or is it a mere waxwork? If you didn't look twice, you could not tell, because waxworks were of a high degree of artistry at the time. In the eighteenth century, Anna Morandi Manzolini made waxworks not to scare people but to educate them in anatomy. Her spectacular creations were in demand in palaces all over Europe, and while she got some acclaim for her work at the time, her position as a woman without formal education meant she did not get all the recognition she deserved. Though she amplified and corrected the work of more famous anatomists of the time, like Valsalva and Malpighi, her name is not in the anatomy hall of fame today. _The Lady Anatomist: The Life and Work of Anna Morandi Manzolini_ (University of Chicago Press) by Rebecca Messbarger offers an appreciation of this remarkable woman, and gives lots of lovely pictures of the anatomical waxworks that made her famous.
Bologna, Italy, was in the eighteenth century a center for anatomical studies. There Anna Morandi was born in 1714. We know almost nothing of her education; how she learned to use Latin or to write scientific treatises with exactitude is a mystery. It is only upon her marriage at twenty six years old to Giovanni Manzolini that she comes into view. Anna Morandi began as an assistant to her husband, and became his equal. When died unexpectedly she took over the business. Wax models were an efficient way to teach anatomy. They did not rot or stink or convey disease, and lasted for centuries. The parts of a model could be laid out in the best way to distinguish them and their relationships. This was the sort of model that the husband and wife team made. It was a household business; there was still a stigma of dissecting the dead, and so the teaching of practical anatomy and surgery was not done in the university itself. The couple had a well-regarded anatomy school, and hundreds of cadavers would come into the home for their research. We don't know, but this must have made for bizarre domesticity, as such quotidian activities as child-rearing and cooking had to go on, too. Those making the Grand Tour would stop in for anatomical demonstrations, and she taught anatomy classes to those pursuing a medical career and to amateurs who just wanted the best offered in this branch of science. Anna Morandi was famous, and she received commissions from royalty such as Catherine the Great. Bologna valued her as showing how a woman might be part of the local renaissance and enlightenment; indeed, there was a tradition of "learned women" within Bologna. However, she still had much prejudice to overcome, some of it surprising to our way of thinking. For instance, anyone who regards her career can tell that she was part of the anatomical scientific effort, but her contemporaries would have regarded her at the lower level of artisan, providing her exceptional instruments to science but not being a scientist herself. She had financial struggles after the death of her husband, and was denied by the elite of Bologna a fair stipend for her services to the community or a position in an educational institution.
Two and a half centuries after her death, her vibrant models can be found in many collections, but most shown in the amazing photographs here are at the University of Bologna. Anna Morandi could not find a position at the university, but her sculptures remain, strange and detailed and beautiful, illustrating the complex cosmos that all of us carry about with us every day without thinking. Anna Morandi had a new way to bring to light those hidden regions; Messbarger's handsome book brings to light a previously hidden scientific personality.
