Unlike the title promises, I cannot see this huge compendium of rather general essays with few clear points of state-of-the-art soil plant modeling as a handbook.
It fails to comprise the interdisciplinary nature of approaches to the soil-plant-atmospheric and human interactions.
I would recommend to stick to the good handbooks in ether discipline like hydrology, soil science, agronomy and computer modeling.

Learn to create and use simulation models—the most reliable and cost-effective tools for predicting real-world results! The Handbook of Processes and Modeling in the Soil-Plant System is the first book to present a holistic view of the processes within the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Unlike other publications, which tend to be more specialized, this book covers nearly all of the processes in the soil-plant system, including the fundamental processes of soil formation, degradation, and the dynamics of water and matter. It also illustrates how simulation modeling can be used to understand and forecast multiple interactions among various processes and predict their environmental impact. This unique volume assembles information that until now was scattered among journals, bulletins, reports, and symposia proceedings to present models that simulate almost all of the processes occurring in the soil-plant system and explores the results that these models are capable of producing. With chapters authored by experts with years of research and teaching experience, the Handbook of Processes and Modeling in the Soil-Plant System examines:
physical, chemical, and biological soil processes
the soil formation and weathering process and its modeling
the impact of radioactive fallout on the soil-plant system
soil degradation processes and ways to control them
water and matter dynamics in the soil-plant system
growth and development of crops at various levels of production
the potentials and limitations of using simulation models
Students, educators, and professionals alike will find the Handbook of Processes and Modeling in the Soil-Plant System an invaluable reference on the soil-plant-atmosphere system and an ideal tool to help develop an effective decision support system.

Micro, Nanosystems and Systems on Chips: Modeling, Control, and Estimation Review

Micro, Nanosystems and Systems on Chips: Modeling, Control, and Estimation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The chapters show how far the field has progressed since the 1980s and the first generation of Atomic Force Microscopes. Now the modelling of the forces experienced on the atomic scale of a surface is quite sophisticated and quantitative. The text describes how current AFMs can measure forces in the sub-nanoNewton range.
Various experimental configurations are summarised, with enough detail given for the reader to understand the salient features. Much of the physics is classical, including references to results in statistical physics that are used to derive functions for noise.
Perhaps most interesting to some readers will be the section on the teleoperation of a micromanipulator, where, and this is the key point, there is multisensory feedback. Virtual reality is used to aid the operator, and the hardware includes a haptic interface that delivers the feedback. The amount of virtual immersion is varied, in an effort to see what minimal amount would suffice to let the operator do useful work. The experiments are very promising, especially in how they appear to let the operator use less mental effort, and thus be able to work for longer times with a manipulator.

Micro and nanosystems represent a major scientific and technological challenge, with actual and potential applications in almost all fields of the human activity. The aim of the present book is to present how concepts from dynamical control systems (modeling, estimation, observation, identification, feedback control) can be adapted and applied to the development of original very small-scale systems and of their human interfaces. The application fields presented here come from micro and nanorobotics, biochips, near-field microscopy (AFM and STM) and nanosystems networks. Alina Voda has drawn contributions from leading experts at top research universities in France to produce a first overview of the major role that control systems science can play in the development of micro and nanosciences and technologies.

Computer Generated Physical Properties offers the environmental scientist a basis to predict the properties of molecules and reengineer them to remove those properties that are harmful to the environment. This technology is currently used in other fields and is now becoming popular in the environmental engineering field because of its pollution prevention and waste reduction capabilities. This book, interdisciplinary in scope, treats the physical properties of matter as generated by computers. It covers a wide variety of topics pointing towards synthesizing new molecules to substitute for reactants, intermediaries, and products in industrial processes with better physical and environmental properties than the original. The author achieves this with a spreadsheet program called SYNPROPS that operates on a PC computer with optimization features. A radar type graph - one for each property - visually sorts the various groups in order of their contribution to the property, creating the necessity for a computer to obtain answers for the structure of the optimum molecules for substitution or synthesis. The author discusses applications to biologically active molecules without side effects, including antineoplatic drugs. Additionally, he demonstrates model compounds and the applications of SYNPROPS' optimization and substitution. This book has everything you need to know about deriving properties and combinational chemistry from molecular structure.

I'm a computer science student working on a masters degree and looking for a thesis topic. CA are an interest of mine and I thought this book might give me some ideas. My first complaint is that there was obviously no quality control. The last paragraph on page 6 is mistakenly reprinted on page 7, and the same thing happens again on pages 8 & 9. Ok, not a huge problem, but it does lead me to question the validity the rest of the book, and when one pays close to $$$$ for a book, it's a slap in the face when such a simple error is not caught before mass publication. I don't know if there is more than one edition, but my copy has a 2000 copyright.
My second complaint is, like another reviewer stated, the reader is often left scratching his/her head trying to understand the rationale/logic of statements as often little or no explaination. I haven't been able to figure out Table 2.1 which is an example of mapping Wolfram Rules (a widely accepted and understood rule numbering scheme) to the author's (I presume) invented "w-set". I tried using his explaination: W7 = x0; W6 = x1 - W7; etc... to make sense of the table but I couldn't get the results in the table using his algorithm. I'm not saying he's wrong, though my faith in the correctness of the book is shaky, but he doesn't clearly explain himself.

Cellular Automata Transforms describes a new approach tousing the dynamical system, popularly known as cellular automata (CA),as a tool for conducting transforms on data. Cellular automata havegenerated a great deal of interest since the early 1960s when JohnConway created the `Game of Life'. This book takes a more serious lookat CA by describing methods by which information building blocks, called basis functions (or bases), can be generated from the evolvingstates. These information blocks can then be used to construct anydata. A typical dynamical system such as CA tend to involve aninfinite possibilities of rules that define the inherent elements, neighborhood size, shape, number of states, and modes of association, etc. To be able to build these building blocks an elegant method hadto be developed to address a large subset of these rules. A newformula, which allows for the definition a large subset of possiblerules, is described in the book. The robustness of this formula allowssearching of the CA rule space in order to develop applications formultimedia compression, data encryption and process modeling. Cellular Automata Transforms is divided into two parts. In PartI the fundamentals of cellular automata, including the history andtraditional applications are outlined. The challenges faced in usingCA to solve practical problems are described. The basic theory behindCellular Automata Transforms (CAT) is developed in this part of thebook. Techniques by which the evolving states of a cellular automatoncan be converted into information building blocks are taught. Themethods (including fast convolutions) by which forward and inversetransforms of any data can be achieved are also presented. Part II contains a description of applications of CAT. Chapter 4describes digital image compression, audio compression and syntheticaudio generation, three approaches for compressing video data. Chapter5 contains both symmetric and public-key implementation of CATencryption. Possible methods of attack are also outlined. Chapter 6looks at process modeling by solving differential and integralequations. Examples are drawn from physics and fluid dynamics.

A unified presentation of environmental model development, implementation, and testing
Integrated Environmental Modeling teaches model development, model implementation, and model testing skills in a unified manner, crosscutting the three "media" comprising environmental systems—air, water, and soil—by focusing on parallels and similarities between them, and introducing a new generation of multimedia models. No other single volume offers comprehensive coverage of chemical transport and fate in all three environmental media, including the resulting impacts on the biosphere and human health, with a focus on the fundamental processes underlying environmental modeling.
Integrated Environmental Modeling provides broad-based training in the development of pollutant transport and fate models in air, water, and soil, with a focus on five essential competencies:
Understanding the fundamental process principles that govern contaminant transport and transformations in multimedia environments, emphasizing the parallels and links between different media
Learning model development skills, starting from the simplest conceptual models and building more complex and realistic models that couple component process modules at the appropriate spatial and temporal scales of resolution
Using statistical methods and data sources to estimate input parameters and characterize model sensitivity and uncertainty
Gaining hands-on experience with computer-aided implementation and evaluation of fate and transport models using realistic case study examples
Applying fate and transport models to evaluate pollutant interactions with the biosphere, particularly in human exposure modeling and health risk assessment

Complete with case studies, Integrated Environmental Modeling is a valuable, single-source tool for senior and graduate students in environmental science and engineering courses on pollutant transport, remediation, and risk assessment, and an essential reference text for professionals in industry, consulting, and government agencies responsible for environmental assessment and risk analysis.

This book provides a good introduction into Monte Carlo simulation for so-called microbeam analysis.
I read this book to start up my work on image formation of scanning electron microscopy. This book was really useful to understand how the Monte Carlo technique could be realized in my lap-top.
Although the author provides a complete set of PASCAL codes,
it was not difficult to convert them into C/C++ based my programming codes.
This book contains many references, mainly journal papers.
So advanced modificaion may require ones to read these articles.
But without this kind of text book,
the analysis by Monte Carlo technique would be more difficult.
To understand the physical background of electron transport in a specimen,
I recommend to read SEM text books by Reimer or by Goldstein et al.

This book describes for the first time how Monte Carlo modeling methods can be applied to electron microscopy and microanalysis.Computer programs for two basic types of Monte Carlo simulation are developed from physical models of the electron scattering process--a single scattering program capable of high accuracy but requiring long computation times, and a plural scattering program which is less accurate but much more rapid.Optimized for use on personal computers, the programs provide a real time graphical display of the interaction. The programs are then used as the starting point for the development of programs aimed at studying particular effects in the electron microscope, including backscattering, secondary electron production, EBIC and cathodo-luminescence imaging, and X-ray microanalysis. The computer code is given in a fully annotated format so that it may be readily modified for specific problems.Throughout, the author includes numerous examples of how such applications can be used. Students and professionals using electron microscopes will want to read this important addition to the literature.

Constrained Markov Decision Processes (Stochastic Modeling Series) Review

Constrained Markov Decision Processes (Stochastic Modeling Series)

This is a monograph, not a textbook, and the author says so in the first sentence of the introduction.
Consequently (?) the mathematical sophistication required varies very widely from one page to the next. Also, it makes no attempt to be self contained, but refers freely to other sources.
The topic is quite specialized, but the need to consider it is argued well.
Unfortunately, it does not contain many examples.
Particularly annoying is the almost unconstrained number of typos, one of the worst books I have seen in this respect.
The book is certainly not an introduction to this topic, suitable for self study, but rather a book written by one specialist for other specialists. This I suppose was the author's intention.

Wireless Personal Communications: Channel Modeling and Systems Engineering (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The field of wireless personal communications is experiencing rapid growth worldwide. Most clearly seen in the huge uptake of cellphones in Europe, Japan and, to a lesser extent, the United States and China. Plus, WiFi has taken off strongly in the developed world, with enhanced 802.11 standards being quickly solidified and adopted.
This volume, as of its writing in 2000, describes much of the engineering and theoretical underpinning of this field. It does not have the 802.11 standards that came out after 2000, but much of the book is still very germane. There is no lack of research interest in this field, driven in no small part by the anticipation that nomadic computer and the rise of the pervasive Web have yet to occur. Still early days for those, we hope.
The field contains tough issues, as may be seen in several papers in the book. In earlier decades, wireless communications were often to and from antennas at fixed locations, with ample power. Or, if the antennas were mobile, like on planes, usually power was not a consideration. Nor the possible maximum length of the antennas. But in modern personal mobile uses, the constraints are far tighter. Power must be minimized, and you cannot draw out a one meter antenna.
Which gives great potential for researchers like yourself to invent and commercialise new applications, if you can overcome these challenges, aided perhaps by ideas in this book!

Water Quality Modeling for Wasteload Allocations and TMDLs Review

Water Quality Modeling for Wasteload Allocations and TMDLs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book attempts to present models usable for study of the complex TMDL problem which tries to separate the contribution of non-point to point sources to water quality in a water body. It indicates to some extent that in most cases the loadings to a water body are 60-80% non-point source, but the book only deals with reducing point sources-not how to clean up non-point sources.
The series of water quality models presented for use are very oversimplified for real applications and reviews by groups such as the WERF indicte that most of them are out of date in that they do not consider real water body hydrodynamics coupled with advanced water quality models.
A better starting place to overcome these deficienies would be the recent workbook published by American Society of Civil Engineers Press "Water Body Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Modeling" on Three dimensional water body modeling, and including an introductory 3D model on a CD ROM.

Random Fields on a Network: Modeling, Statistics, and Applications (Probability and Its Applications)
Average Reviews:

Guyon has done research in the theory of random fields. This text was first published in French in 1992 and then translated to English and published by Springer-Verlag in 1995. This theory is rapidly developing and there have been many new advances over the nine years since the publication of this work. Nevertheless it contains a good theoretical development and treatment of the theory and provides applications to image processing.
The important results on stochastic algorithms are covered in Chapter Six which includes the results on Gibbs sampling that first had a big impact on spatial modeling and image processing through the work of the Gemans. Later it was recognized to be a special case of Markov Chain Monte Carlo modeling that is now so crucial to the practical implementation of Bayesian statistical methods.
The book contains an excellent list of over 175 references.

The theory of spatial models over lattices, or random fields as they are known, has developed significantly over recent years. This book provides a graduate-level introduction to the subject which assumes only a basic knowledge of probability and statistics, finite Markov chains, and the spectral theory of second-order processes. A particular strength of this book is its emphasis on examples - both to motivate the theory which is being developed, and to demonstrate the applications which range from statistical mechanics to image analysis and from statistics to stochastic algorithms.
