CNC Programming Handbook, 2nd Edition Review

CNC Programming Handbook, 2nd Edition

This is an incredibly detailed and helpful book for learning the concepts behind programming CNC machine tools. Although most programming is now done with the aid of CAM programs which generate G-code based on a drawing of the part to be machined, the complexities of CNC machining demand that the operator have a thorough understanding of CNC programming. From configuring a post processor in a CAM program, to fixing simple errors in a generated program "on the fly", to entering single lines in a machine's Manual Data Input mode, the helpfulness of this book cannot be understated. Besides programming tutorials, the book also covers strategies for programming various cycles and tool changes. The CD-ROM contains tests and projects which make this a useful textbook in a classroom setting.
The book begins with an overview of Numerical Control concepts, CNC Milling and Turning machines, coordinate geometry, and control systems. For the student or engineer producing drawings or parts that are to be machined, these sections will allow an understanding of what operations the machines are capable of performing, and how they do the work.
The remaining chapters deal with the planning and structure of a program, so that a drawing can be understood, the various machining operations separated, and the order of operations decided upon. In order to direct a machine to mill a particular pocket, you must include variables such as the diameter of an endmill, the amount of step over per pass, the feed rate, the spindle speed, the endmill shape, etc. This book gives you good practice at doing just that. A CNC machine tool is one of the few tools that is capable of self-destructing if you program it to do so, and it is only by understanding the instructions given to the tool that such disasters can be avoided and productive work be accomplished.
This book offers an incredibly detailed step-by-step explanation of all standard G-codes, modality, blocks, various functions, etc. For example, there is an entire chapter just on "G00". This book is exhaustive in it's treatment of all the possible commands and instructions, combinations, and interactions with machines. Toolchanging is handled, as well as special situations such as how to deal with an oversized tool in the ATC. Drill and fixed cycles are covered comprehensively, especially the calculations for such things as countersinking with a pilot drill, breakthrough depth, nominal and effective tool diameter, and point lengths.
The only negative thing I have to say is that there are some pretty bad grammar and syntax errors in some of the author's explanations that sometimes interfere with the comprehension of the material. I would expect a second edition of such a popular and widely read technical book to have had better proofreading than this.
Reading this book will not only make you a better CNC programmer, but it will unlock the potential of codes and techniques that you may not have known existed, or thought too complex to incorporate in your machining. There is no better guide to CNC programming than this book, and I highly recommend it.

Excerpts of my review from Psychometrika are above. Unfortunately half the quotes really apply to the other book I was reviewing at the time, the title by Skrondal and Rabe-Hesketh (which is also a nice book, but rather different). Anyway, this book very much deserves a five star rating. It shows how many IRT models fit together as regression models in the generalized linear (or nonlinear) mixed model framework. SAS code is provided for nearly all models in the book. The breadth of talented authors assembled by the editors is substantial. This is an excellent book for "advanced" users of IRT or people who are proficient with GLMMs and want to use them as measurement models. It is not a "beginner's book" by any stretch of the imagination, but a very good title to own if you want to start doing projects with real data. In addition to the SAS code, one of the must useful features of the book is the fact that the authors keep to only a few datasets, which means you get a very intensive look at them. Clever!

The book was ok. You can tell it has Lynn's hand on it but also you can tell some parts was not his writing.
The end was very disappointing because Lynn always gave you a complete finish and this book was like he pass away before he could finish the end. He was a great writer and he will be greatly missed.

Dynamical Symmetry Review

Dynamical Symmetry
Average Reviews:

Amazing read! Five stars! This book will assuredly stimulate new levels of thinking for the reader in various aspects of dynamical symmetry and it points to discoveries yet to be made in better understanding the some principals of physics therein. ...And makes important discoveries of its own in the process. Each reader should see if they can infer and verify for themselves the import of powerful new implications based upon Maxwell's original equations set forth towards the end of the book.Algebraic Theory of Molecules (Topics in Physical Chemistry Series)

Whenever systems are governed by continuous chains of causes and effects, their behavior exhibits the consequences of dynamical symmetries, many of them far from obvious. Dynamical Symmetry introduces the reader to Sophus Lie's discoveries of the connections between differential equations and continuous groups that underlie this observation. It develops and applies the mathematical relations between dynamics and geometry that result. Systematic methods for uncovering dynamical symmetries are described, and put to use. Much material in the book is new and some has only recently appeared in research journals.
Though Lie groups play a key role in elementary particle physics, their connection with differential equations is more often exploited in applied mathematics and engineering. Dynamical Symmetry bridges this gap in a novel manner designed to help readers establish new connections in their own areas of interest. Emphasis is placed on applications to physics and chemistry. Applications to many of the other sciences illustrate both general principles and the ubiquitousness of dynamical symmetries.

Clinical Knowledge Management: Opportunities and Challenges Review

Clinical Knowledge Management: Opportunities and Challenges

As a medic I am, like many of my breed, skeptical when a new "health management" book comes to the fore. It appears that clinical knowledge and management of these concepts is here to stay. I purchased this book in order to gain more of a grounding in the field and can say I was pleasantly surprised by its approach.
Rather than being a prescription to all things clinical, the book is a compilation of clinical knowledge practice from around the world. It claims to be the first book to take the necessary holistic approach for knowledge management from both the IT and clinical perspectives and I can well believe this.
I particularly liked the KM in action section of the book. It is all to easy to pontificate on new theories without providing evidence to support these views. This book has evidence in spades and more than one or two suggestions which I can take forward to my next management meeting.

Academics and practitioners working in the field of healthcare management need to effectively manage knowledge and knowledge management (KM). KM places value on the tacit knowledge that individuals hold within an institution and often makes use of IT to free up the collective wisdom of individuals within an organization.Clinical Knowledge Management: Opportunities and Challenges establishes a convergence in thinking between KM and knowledge engineering healthcare applications. This book assembles original and innovative contributions in the area of KM and knowledge engineering applications for healthcare systems and clinical engineering applications.Clinical Knowledge Management: Opportunities and Challenges reinforces the implicit contention that the healthcare industry is calling for KM frameworks that can marry these two perspectives. This book has appeal in both camps and is the first to genuinely examine KM for healthcare in the necessary holistic manner.

I just passed the 70-224 test today and it was not because of this book. The first half of this book is all about the history of email, exchange business practices, and every acronym you can imagine (most were not even real acronyms). None of this pertains to the actual test and it will do nothing but fill your head with useless information. There are hardly any diagrams or references, and the practice exam program that came with the book asked me questions on customizing MMC consoles :( I have been a steady fan of Syngress study guides and so far I have used them to pass my CCNA, CCDA, the 4 core MCSE tests and now the 70-224. Btw ... the publisher of Exam Cram and Exam Prep books is now out of business ... I'm sure you can figure out why :)

Distributed and Multi-Database Systems (The Artech House Computer Science Library) Review

Distributed and Multi-Database Systems (The Artech House Computer Science Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book to get some ideas for setting up a database with multiple servers in different countries. One requirement was high availability and fast response times under the condition of instable network connections. I am not a database expert, so I can not assess the accuracy and completeness of the material very well. The following is my view as a "novice" reader.
The book is divided into three parts: theory, distributed database architectures, and multi-database architectures. Part one introduces relational algebra, SQL, database models (hierarchical, network, relational), ER-diagrams and such. Part two concentrates on homogenous distributed database architectures. Part three is about heterogenous (e.g. mixed hierarchical/relational) distributed database systems.
The book is demonstratively well structured and easy to read. The author begins with a roadmap, and each chapter begins with a statement of purpose, a description what will follow and how this relates to the topic. I found part one to be a decent introduction to general database concepts. However, I had the impression that the book is too shallow overall. One of the more noticable omissions (to me) is in the part about deadlocks: the author concentrates entirely on deadlock detection, while deadlock avoidance and deadlock prevention are not even mentioned. I can't say if this is because the latter are not used in databases. Moreover, as another reader noted, the examples are full of errors, which is quite annoying.
Altogether, the book entirely failed to give me any hints for solving my problem. Data replication, which is probably the one technique that I need to apply under the circumstances described above, is mentioned in only one paragraph in the entire book. The author instead focuses entirely on database partitioning. If you need that, the book may be for you, although I assume there are better books on the subject. I do not recommend this book.

Adaptive Modelling, Estimation and Fusion from Data Review

Adaptive Modelling, Estimation and Fusion from Data
Average Reviews:

While i do not deny the contribution at providing a more or less complete treatment of neurofuzzy techniques for data modeling, i'm still wondering where the non-theoretical chapters dealing with how to cope with real data with these techniques are hidden. The few examples in the book are mostly artificial and very limited in their scope. i'm not sure people dealing with data have an interest at reading this book, it's more about neurofuzzy techniques than data modelling.
The book edited by Schwefel, Weneger and Weinert entitled "Advances in computational intelligence" published by Springer emphasizes a lot more on fuzzy techniques based on real data although it does not discuss the "neuro" part of "neuro-fuzzy" techniques.
Still this book is not bad from a theoretical neuro-fuzzy perspective, but since these techniques are aimed at dealing with real data, i would have hoped a much better treatment of the practical aspects, which it fails to provide.

Holographic Data Storage: From Theory to Practical Systems Review

Holographic Data Storage: From Theory to Practical Systems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This truly unique book documents how a problem that has been extant since the advent of holography (Dennis Gabor received the 1971 Nobel Prize for Holography, and in his Nobel Lecture showed holograms stored in media in a lab in 1964) has finally been reduced to commercial product, packaged in a variety of ways. One of the things that is deceptive about this book is how straightfoward and easy it all seems; for over fifty years, many others around the globe have struggled to do what this team did, and failed (and not for lack of intellectual capable individuals and patient funding). One of the many reasons why this team succeeded when all others to date failed is that the team had both a digital storage media and a digital reader/writer (drive): when there were problems with the media, the drive could be changed to fix it, and when there were problems with the drive, the media changed to fix it. There is no other book like this book, it will be the standard reference for years to come.
One should contrast this work with the IBM Random Access Method for Accounting and Control (RAMAC) which was the original magnetic disk drive that IBM commercialized in 1956; it could store five megabytes, 60 inches x 68 inches x 29 inches, and could barely fit in the freight bay of a cargo airplane; at the time magnetic tape was in widespread use, was far less expensive, and had far greater capacity, and now fifty years later the situation has entirely flipped. When Thomas J.Watson, Jr., announced RAMAC he said: "Today is the greatest new product day in the history of IBM and, I believe, in the history of the office equipment industry. These products provide the most significant advancement toward business control and operation by electronics to be made thus far."

Holographic Data Storage: From Theory to Practical Systems is a primer on the design and building of a holographic data storage system covering the physics, Servo, Data Channel, Recording Materials, and optics behind holographic storage, the requirements of a functioning system, and its integration into "real-life" systems. Later chapters highlight recent developments in holographic storage which have enabled readiness for commercial implementation and discuss the general outlook for the technology, including the transition from professional to consumer markets and the possibilities for mass reproduction.

Kiki's Memoirs Review

Being a veritable Kiki virgin before I read this book, I found Kiki's Memoirs more than helpful in showing the atmosphere of 1920's Paris. I did, however, agree with Ernest Hemingway's sentiments from his introdution-it is impossible to translate Kiki's words very well. It seems like Samuel Putnam was unable to get more than four sentences out without putting in an exclamation mark. This breaks the narrative up considerably. I would have given this book three stars, but I loved the Man Ray photos in it. The real strength of this book lies in the artwork.
