As a PhD student in human-computer interaction, I have bought and read a lot of HCI books - and this one, I definitively should not have.
Not only is the printing very, very bad (is seems as if somebody faxed some papers to a publisher who scanned the faxes and printed them), the book is also not organised (making it - from my perspective, as somebody with a background in physics and cognitive psychology - impossible to detect meaning, neither in the division of the book into parts, nor in the sequence of papers), and the choice of papers is (in my opinion, after leafing through it for at least five times, reading some of the abstracts and all of the contributers' appended CVs), rather dubious.
The introduction is so badly written and typeset - it should have been a warning sign for me.
My advice: Download and print those papers (if you really do encounter them some other place than in this book), and most certainly don't pay over $80.

Speaking as an undergraduate, _Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World_ is not an easy read, and I found some parts (e.g., OO statechart diagrams) almost inaccessible despite my persistent and conscientious efforts to grasp the material given my little but solid background in OO programming. The authors know their field well, and it is evident they put much effort into writing this book. Yet the model-making approach they presented (notably in chapters 5, 6, 7, and 9) obscured rather than improved my understanding of software development. Perhaps I tend to be averse to graphical models of this kind. In any case, a good introductory object-oriented programming textbook covering Java or C++ is a better place to start to learn these ideas because without actually implementing program code, the models seem like "floating" abstractions.
I have two recommendations to the authors that might improve the average student's ability to understand the content, especially the treatment on modeling:
1. Make the writing style less academic and more conversational. A good example of an accessible and engaging presentation of otherwise "mundane" content is David Kelley's _The Art of Reasoning_ (I know it's a book on informal logic and not systems analysis and design, but there are many parallels between the subjects).
2. After a new concept is introduced, immediately provide exercises *with* ideal solutions at the back of the book. There are no solutions in this textbook and no student solution manual is available. Most students need to start out with many easy but progressively more challenging problems and build on that foundation in order to gain confidence in the discipline. Again, see the "Practice Quizzes" in David Kelley's _The Art of Reasoning_ as an example of a textbook that helps the student comprehend the material. After every significant section, Kelley includes many small exercises (with solutions) in order to test the student's understanding of the concepts or principles and to ensure the student has thoroughly absorbed the information before moving on to more complex knowledge. I stress that I am not recommending that the content be "dumbed down." What I am saying is that since systems analysis and design is difficult and requires much practice to master, it is the job of the teacher to build a bridge between the challenging but potentially graspable ideas and the students who fall short of brilliant. In other words, this book is in desperate need of many smaller, easier problems that progressively build up to the kind of arduous case studies that *are* included at the end of the chapters.
This is a good book if you have the aptitude and appetite for graphical model-making and some experience in programming. Yet I highly suspect there are better books out there on this topic for introductory students.

This is an incredibly detailed and helpful book for learning the concepts behind programming CNC machine tools. Although most programming is now done with the aid of CAM programs which generate G-code based on a drawing of the part to be machined, the complexities of CNC machining demand that the operator have a thorough understanding of CNC programming. From configuring a post processor in a CAM program, to fixing simple errors in a generated program "on the fly", to entering single lines in a machine's Manual Data Input mode, the helpfulness of this book cannot be understated. Besides programming tutorials, the book also covers strategies for programming various cycles and tool changes. The CD-ROM contains tests and projects which make this a useful textbook in a classroom setting.
The book begins with an overview of Numerical Control concepts, CNC Milling and Turning machines, coordinate geometry, and control systems. For the student or engineer producing drawings or parts that are to be machined, these sections will allow an understanding of what operations the machines are capable of performing, and how they do the work.
The remaining chapters deal with the planning and structure of a program, so that a drawing can be understood, the various machining operations separated, and the order of operations decided upon. In order to direct a machine to mill a particular pocket, you must include variables such as the diameter of an endmill, the amount of step over per pass, the feed rate, the spindle speed, the endmill shape, etc. This book gives you good practice at doing just that. A CNC machine tool is one of the few tools that is capable of self-destructing if you program it to do so, and it is only by understanding the instructions given to the tool that such disasters can be avoided and productive work be accomplished.
This book offers an incredibly detailed step-by-step explanation of all standard G-codes, modality, blocks, various functions, etc. For example, there is an entire chapter just on "G00". This book is exhaustive in it's treatment of all the possible commands and instructions, combinations, and interactions with machines. Toolchanging is handled, as well as special situations such as how to deal with an oversized tool in the ATC. Drill and fixed cycles are covered comprehensively, especially the calculations for such things as countersinking with a pilot drill, breakthrough depth, nominal and effective tool diameter, and point lengths.
The only negative thing I have to say is that there are some pretty bad grammar and syntax errors in some of the author's explanations that sometimes interfere with the comprehension of the material. I would expect a second edition of such a popular and widely read technical book to have had better proofreading than this.
Reading this book will not only make you a better CNC programmer, but it will unlock the potential of codes and techniques that you may not have known existed, or thought too complex to incorporate in your machining. There is no better guide to CNC programming than this book, and I highly recommend it.

This book is required reading for a network management course I am taking. The book is generally informative at maybe a college junior business student level 1st network management course. It is easy to read and discusses some important subjects. I have not finished it yet.
The authors do go off on a tangent about writing network speeds correctly which I think is a bit overdone.
The cost of the book is just way too high for me. If it was not required I would not have purchased this book.
In summary, a good interesting read but quite costly.

I actually had to buy this book for a college class however the class didn't require a thorough reading of the book. Well, after the class, months after, I went back to the book and re-read it and I must say, it's a great book. It goes over networking hardware, the OSI layer and has several diagrams. I really found this book to be helpful.
