very good book for students which are studying electrical machines, i recommend this book since it is very illustrative, i mean there are a lot of schematics which helps you to understand whats going on......In addition, there was some errors in some of the equations but the writer is sending the corrections along with the book (i.e. very small typical mistakes which happens when you typing very fast on the computer keyboard).

This textbook follows the treatment of electric machinesand drives in my earlier textbook "Electric Drives – An IntegrativeApproach."I have attempted to use the same notation to provideconsistency.If I am asked to list three unique features of thisbook, the following are foremost in my opinion:Keeping it simple without being simplistic, Avoiding unnecessary mathematics, and Providing a "physical" picture as much as possible for visualization purposes. The third item above needs elaboration.Most research literature andtextbooks in this field treat dq-axis transformation of a-b-c phasequantities on a purely mathematical basis, without relating thistransformation to a set of windings that could be visualized.Theapproach adopted in this book is different but leads to the sameresults - we visual a set of representative dq windings along anorthogonal set of axes and then relate their currents and voltages tothe a-b-c phase quantities.This discussion follows seamlessly fromthe treatment of space vectors and the equivalent windingrepresentation in steady state in the previous course.For discussion of all topics in this course, computer simulations are a necessity.For this purpose, I have chosen Simulink for the following reasons:a student-version that is more than sufficient for our purposes is available at a very reasonable price and it takes extremely short time to become proficient in its use.Moreover, this software simplifies the development of a real-time controller of drives in the hardware laboratory for student experimentation – such a laboratory, using 42-V (a future standard for automotive voltages) machines, is at present under development using a digital signal processor based rapid-prototyping tool.All chapters in this book can be covered in a single-semester course.The MATLAB and the Simulink files used in examples are included on a cd-rom attached to this book.The reader is urged to first look at the read-me file on this cd-rom before reading this textbook.

Firstly, the cd does not contain any MatLab code or Simulink sample models, it just contains very simple powerpoint presentations. I personally was not impressed by any of the information presented there. The text does discuss mathematical modelling using Matlab and some code is presented in the book. It assumes you know at least introductory Matlab, and the this is one of my beef's with the text; it is not an introductory Matlab text. In addition, the simulink component is just touched very briefly on towards the text's end. The book can be used to gain an appreciation of modelling, but additional references will have to be obtained to enhance one's competency in Matlab and Simulink.
