The back cover of the book is, in my view, quite accurate. It covers a traditional topic, regression, from a modern perspective. By that it means "assumes interactive use of software" and is very focused on formulating and answering questions about data rather than prescribing a certain course of action. It is not a textbook on "modern" regression such as smoothing or the like, though there is a chapter on that, along with logistic regression, basic time series and mixed models. The fact that all the datasets and examples are freely available and that the author doesn't skip steps in his treatment is a HUGE benefit to instructors using this book for class or those engaged in self-study. I am giving this book a spin in my class in the fall....

Nelken is the editor of this book, for which read, he has collated the material. There is not a coherent developing thread, it is just a mis-mash of articles about volatility. At least two of the chapters have results that are demonstrably incorrect.

Yeah, it's an ok book, but it's got a lot of typos and doesn't follow the curriculum of many Dif Equ classes. The first chapter is packed with tons of real applications and whatnot to distract you from actually getting to solve some Dif Equ's. By the time you get to chapter 4 it's pretty basic though, still doesn't cover everything in other classes (and covers some stuff not in other classes.

This concise and up-to-date textbook is designed for the standard sophomore course in differential equations. It treats the basic ideas, models, and solution methods in a user friendly format that is accessible to engineers, scientists, economists, and mathematics majors. It emphasizes analytical, graphical, and numerical techniques, and it provides the tools needed by students to continue to the next level in applying the methods to more advanced problems. There is a strong connection to applications with motivations in mechanics and heat transfer, circuits, biology, economics, chemical reactors, and other areas. Moreover, the text contains a new, elementary chapter on systems of differential equations, both linear and nonlinear, that introduces key ideas without matrix analysis. Two subsequent chapters treat systems in a more formal way. Briefly, the topics include: First-order equations: separable, linear, autonomous, and bifurcation phenomena; Second-order linear homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations; Laplace transforms; and Linear and nonlinear systems, and phase plane properties.

A Vast Machine: Computer Models, Climate Data, and the Politics of Global Warming Review

A Vast Machine: Computer Models, Climate Data, and the Politics of Global Warming
Average Reviews:

Understanding how we know about climate, and even what it means to know about climate and climate change, is essential if we are to have an informed debate. This is far and away the best book I have read on the infrastructure behind our knowledge of climate change, how that infrastructure developed, and how the infrastructure shapes our understanding.
The story begins in the 1600s as systematic collection of weather data began (at least in the modern period, other cultures such as the Chinese have older records and it would be interesting to unearth these, although the data normalization issues would be extreme). It picks up speed in the 19th C with global trade and then the telegraph. The more data collected, and the more data is exchanged, the more important it becomes to normalize data for comparison. Normalization requires some form of data model, a theory that makes the data meaningful. Indeed, this is Edwards point, all data about weather and climate only becomes meaningful in the context of a model (this is of course generally true).
Work accelerated during WW2 and then exploded in the 50s and 60s as computers became more available. The role played by John Von Neumann in this is fascinating, as is the nugget that his second wife Klara Von Neumann taught early weather scientists how to program (there is a whole hidden history of the role of woman in developing computer programming that needs to be written - or if you know of one please add it to the comments of this review or tweet it to me @StevenForth).
Edwards also introduces some useful concepts such as Data Friction and Computational Friction. I think my company can apply these in its own work, so for me this has been a very practical text.
Modern models of climate are complex and are growing more so. They have to be to integrate data from multiple sources. One of the main lines of evidence for climate change is that data from many different sources are converging to suggest that climate change is a real and accelerating phenomena. One can meaningfully ask if this convergence is an artifact of the models, although this appears unlikely given the diversity of the data and models. But Edwards shows that it is idiotic to claim that the data and the models can be meaningfully separated. This is true in all science and not just climate science. A theory is a model to normalize and integrate data and to uncover and make meaningful relations between disparate data. That these models are now expressed numerically in computations, rather than as differential equations or sentences in a human language or drawings is one of the major shifts of the information age. It will be interesting to dig deeper into the formal relations between these diffferent modeling languages.

The main goal of this textbook is to establish a bridge between the theoretical aspects of modern geometry and topology on the one hand and computer experimental geometry on the other. Thus the theory and application of mathematical visualization are given equal emphasis. This, along with the ample illustrations and the fact that each chapter is designed as an independent unit, makes Topological Modeling for Visualization a unique book in its field. The two internationally famous authors, A. T. Fomenko and T. L. Kunii, thoroughly explain the necessary mathematical techniques so that undergraduate students with only a grounding in high-school mathematics can benefit from using this book. While linear problems are covered, the emphasis is on nonlinear problems, with many examples relating to natural phenomena and todays abundant information sources. Students in the fields of mathematics and computing will find it rigorous enough to serve as a basic text in differential geometry and topology, while students from fields as diverse as cognitive science and economics who need to solve nonlinear problems will find this book indispensable.

The monograph provides the description of the developed DiaSter system, as well as the main characteristics of advanced original methods of modelling, knowledge discovery, simulator construction, diagnostics, control, and supervision control applied to the system under investigation. This system allows the early recognition of abnormal states of industrial processes and faults or malfunctions of actuators, as well as technological and measuring units. The general characteristics developed in DiaSter allow its direct application to power, chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical and food industries. As the system has an open architecture, it can be connected practically with any other control systems.
The main part of the monograph discusses analytical and artificial intelligence methods implemented in the DiaSter system. One of the first chapters is devoted to problems of physical process modelling, fundamental in modern control, diagnostics, or designing and searching for alternative solutions. An extensive chapter provides the description of process diagnosis methods, which can be found useful in industry and were implemented in the DiaSter system. Methods of fault identification are considered mainly with the application of fuzzy logic. Another chapter describes the methods of supervision control implemented in the system. The last chapter illustrates the operation of different functions of DiaSter for the example of the three tanks system. The selected example has tutorial advantages and gives the opportunity of studying the basic features of the DiaSter system.

Visualizing Data Review

Visualizing Data
Average Reviews:

This book was recommended highly to me by a former university professor (and now consultant). It exceeds my expectations. The figures and acompanying explanations are very clear, as is the language throughout. Visualizing Data discusses several tools with which I was not familiar, and clarifies tools that I thought I understood (including box plots). I have taken several university statistics classes, but I believe this book would help anyone involved in displaying or interpreting data. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but when your business depends on it, a well-defined plot or graph can be worth much more. Visualizing Data enables you to produce well-defined plots and graphs with confidence.

Visualizing Data is about visualizationtools that provide deep insight into thestructure of data. There are graphicaltools such as coplots, multiway dot plots, and the equal count algorithm. There arefitting tools such as loess and bisquarethat fit equations, nonparametric curves, and nonparametric surfaces to data. But the book is much more than just acompendium of useful tools. It conveys astrategy for data analysis that stressesthe use of visualization to thoroughlystudy the structure of data and to checkthe validity of statistical models fittedto data. The result of the tools and thestrategy is a vast increase in what you canlearn from your data. The book demonstratesthis by reanalyzing many data sets from thescientific literature, revealing missedeffects and inappropriate models fitted to data.

The book covers all the fundamental practices of nonlinear system identification. Less emphasis is made on theory and proofs and much more on actual implementation aspects. Thus this book can be very informative and useful for those that want to have a sharp overview and do not want to figure out the mathematical details by themselves. Lots of examples help to quickly understand the concepts. After reading the book you will much easily understand recent publications in this field.

If you like "Intro to Operations Research" by Hillier and Lieberman (0072416181), you will have two feelings about this book. The less-math-background people will find this is the best-fit for them for its less mathematical theories. Math-people will find this book is only introductory book. However, this book is not a substitution for 0072416181. This book is more application and focus on modeling and applying issues; while 0072416181 is more on solving. The spreadsheet application are now included in this book. Many traditional terms of OR are revised to make it more understandable, e.g., What-if (sensitivity analysis), Yes-No question (BIP). Several success stories and cases of OR/MS are given as well as the "how-to". I found this is a good book for business students or manager who has less time in solving than making money. Many sections are dedicated for popular problems, e.g., Inventory management, transportation, Forecasting, Project management. While this book is quite introductory book, the further study are given, e.g., IP, QAP, Goal Prog. After reading my review, please be silent for one minute to pay respect for Dr. Gerald J. Lieberman, co-author of this book and 0072416181. I'm indebted for your work...

I found this book to be an excellent source for engineering students and practitioners. The distinguishing feature of the book is the way in which it introduces reader to complex modelling concepts in an easy to understand manner, covering both ordinary and partial differential equations. The book is rich in practical examples, and useful tables and graphs. Earlier prints suffer from typographical errors that are found to be corrected in the latest print of the book.

Modeling is practiced in engineering and all physical sciences. Many specialized texts exist - written at a high level - that cover this subject. However, students and even professionals often experience difficulties in setting up and solving even the simplest of models. This can be attributed to three difficulties: the proper choice of model, the absence of precise solutions, and the necessity to make suitable simplifying assumptions and approximations. Overcoming these difficulties is the focus of The Art of Modeling in Science and Engineering. The text is designed foradvanced undergraduate and graduate students and practicing professionals in the sciences and engineering with an interest in Modeling based on Mass, Energy and Momentum or Force Balances. The book covers a wide range of physical processes and phenomena drawn from chemical, mechanical, civil, environmental sciences and bio- sciences. A separate section is devoted to "real World" industrial problems. The author explains how to choose the simplest model, obtain an appropriate solution to the problem and make simplifying assumptions/approximations.

Just as the title says. First, you can't even look at the book without opening it in a way that makes it unable to be returned. I truley enjoyed the book, " How to Enter the business of Commercial Modeling & Acting...Without Getting Ripped Off!"! I have learned how to act in college, but never how to make great money acting in the business! I never realized how simple it was for someone to get started in commercial modeling and acting! This book is great because it holds your hand throughout the book and makes it so simple to get started. I have already loaned it to a few freinds and a stage mom or two! It was also great to read the interviews from actors, models and the folks who hire talent. The book covered the entire spectrum of the business. I would advise that not only "new" talent read this but experienced as well. I think it is awesome that the author took the time to write this book because anyone reading it CAN NOT GET SCAMMED IN THE INDUSTRY! Like Morgan Creek Productions quoted on the back of the book, "Shark repellent for the sertious actor" it couldn't have been said better! So many people think that they have to be beautiful to model...WRONG! The Author made a great point..He said that "real" people target the"real" consumer. As a matter of fact, when I watched TV after reading the book, it was about 80% real people in the tv commercials. Even radio commercials lately have the everyday type of voice as opposed to the radio announcer type of voice. I never realized there was such a demand for people like me in the commercial industry.

Langdon's book is an important addition to the literature on Genetic Programming. After a thorough survey of the state of the art in the field, he describes how Genetic Programming can be used to generate the standard data structures that humans rely on so heavily. He then describes how these data structures can be used to extend the power of Genetic Programming, and gives a number of useful examples. In all, an important part of any GP library.

Computers that `program themselves' has long been an aim ofcomputer scientists. Recently genetic programming (GP) has started toshow its promise by automatically evolving programs. Indeed in a smallnumber of problems GP has evolved programs whose performance issimilar to or even slightly better than that of programs written bypeople. The main thrust of GP has been to automatically createfunctions. While these can be of great use they contain no memory andrelatively little work has addressed automatic creation of programcode including stored data. This issue is the main focus of GeneticProgramming, and Data Structures: Genetic Programming + DataStructures = Automatic Programming!. This book is motivated by the observation from software engineeringthat data abstraction (e.g., via abstract data types) is essential inprograms created by human programmers. This book shows that abstractdata types can be similarly beneficial to the automatic production ofprograms using GP. Genetic Programming and Data Structures: Genetic Programming +Data Structures = Automatic Programming! shows how abstractdata types (stacks, queues and lists) can be evolved using geneticprogramming, demonstrates how GP can evolve general programs whichsolve the nested brackets problem, recognises a Dyck context freelanguage, and implements a simple four function calculator. In thesecases, an appropriate data structure is beneficial compared to simpleindexed memory. This book also includes a survey of GP, with acritical review of experiments with evolving memory, and reportsinvestigations of real world electrical network maintenance schedulingproblems that demonstrate that Genetic Algorithms can find low costviable solutions to such problems. Genetic Programming and Data Structures: Genetic Programming +Data Structures = Automatic Programming! should be of directinterest to computer scientists doing research on genetic programming, genetic algorithms, data structures, and artificial intelligence. Inaddition, this book will be of interest to practitioners working inall of these areas and to those interested in automatic programming.
