Using and Understanding Mathematics: A Quantitative Reasoning Approach (4th Edition) Review

I bought this book over a year ago for a class I had to take. I would have to say that this book is the best learning tool I have been able to use in understanding mathmatics. I was diagnosed with a math disability. This book has helped me with this disability. I am able to understand concepts and apply my understanding of those concepts. It has given me a self confidence I didn't think I would ever have. I have tried other texts and found them to be either to general in thier knowledge or poor in thier use of the english language. I found this book to be very descriptive and helps the student to paint a picture of what problems they may face in the world of mathmatics. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has had a hard time with spatial ability. The detailed step by step process is wonderful. It covers an array of subjects. I still use it to help me through other classes. I have found it to be the only book detailed enough to teach me properly. It is the best college book I have ever had to buy. I really have gotten my dollars worth out of it.

I cannot quite honestly give this book (*first* edition, not second) a full five-point-zero stars because it somewhat comes apart the closer one gets to the final chapters. I read this book a few years ago, so I apologize for lack of specificity. However, I completely agree with the prior reviewer who stated that this book is better than Kunz's and Luebbers' book, which I appears to be a slightly edited compilation of previous publications --- even if that is completely untrue. In fact, in my opinion, Taflove's book (again, first edition) is a *much* better textbook than Kunz and Luebbers.
The Book News review is somewhat misleading. Taflove derives the difference equations in full, painstaking detail. (Perhaps the Book News reviewer fell asleep during that portion.) For me, this was the most valuable and educational portion of the book. Example applications have their place, but only after understanding the basic principles. Taflove did an excellent job in describing these principles, which go far beyond the basic Yee algorithm (e.g. extrapolation techniques and incorporation of BC's). Those readers familiar with other FD books should understand what I'm saying here: Anyone who reads this book and understands it will not only be conversant about FDTD but should also be able to write solid working codes. With the K&L book, this is very questionable.

This extensively revised and expanded third edition of the Artech House bestseller, Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, offers engineers the most up-to-date and definitive resource on this critical method for solving Maxwell's equations. The method helps practitioners design antennas, wireless communications devices, high-speed digital and microwave circuits, and integrated optical devices with unsurpassed efficiency. There has been considerable advancement in FDTD computational technology over the past few years, and the third edition brings professionals the very latest details with entirely new chapters on important techniques, major updates on key topics, and new discussions on emerging areas such as nanophotonics. What's more, to supplement the third edition, the authors have created a Web site with solutions to problems, downloadable graphics and videos, and updates, making this new edition the ideal textbook on the subject as well.

Modeling, Diagnostics and Process Control: Implementation in the DiaSter System Review

Modeling, Diagnostics and Process Control: Implementation in the DiaSter System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The monograph provides the description of the developed DiaSter system, as well as the main characteristics of advanced original methods of modelling, knowledge discovery, simulator construction, diagnostics, control, and supervision control applied to the system under investigation. This system allows the early recognition of abnormal states of industrial processes and faults or malfunctions of actuators, as well as technological and measuring units. The general characteristics developed in DiaSter allow its direct application to power, chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical and food industries. As the system has an open architecture, it can be connected practically with any other control systems.
The main part of the monograph discusses analytical and artificial intelligence methods implemented in the DiaSter system. One of the first chapters is devoted to problems of physical process modelling, fundamental in modern control, diagnostics, or designing and searching for alternative solutions. An extensive chapter provides the description of process diagnosis methods, which can be found useful in industry and were implemented in the DiaSter system. Methods of fault identification are considered mainly with the application of fuzzy logic. Another chapter describes the methods of supervision control implemented in the system. The last chapter illustrates the operation of different functions of DiaSter for the example of the three tanks system. The selected example has tutorial advantages and gives the opportunity of studying the basic features of the DiaSter system.

Modern control systems are complex in the sense of implementing numerous functions, such as process variable processing, digital control, process monitoring and alarm indication, graphic visualization of process running, or data exchange with other systems or databases. This book conveys a description of the developed DiaSter system as well as characteristics of advanced original methods of modeling, knowledge discovery, simulator construction, process diagnosis, as well as predictive and supervision control applied in the system. The system allows early recognition of abnormal states of industrial processes along with faults or malfunctions of actuators as well as technological and measuring units. The universality of solutions implemented in DiaSter facilitates its broad application, for example, in the power, chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical and food industries. The system is a world-scale unique solution, and due to its open architecture it can be connected practically with any other control systems. The monograph presents theoretical and practical results of research into fault diagnosis and control conducted over many years within the cooperation of Polish research teams from the Warsaw University of Technology, the University of Zielona Góra, the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, and the Technical University of Rzeszów.The book will be of great interest to researchers and advanced students in automatic control, technical diagnostics and computer engineering, and to engineers tasked with the development of advanced control systems of complex industrial processes.

A university course I am taking requires this textbook. I ordered it from Amazon, and it arrived well ahead of time, and even had the included CD (which usually "disappears" if I order a textbook from an online source).
Thanks, Amazon!

Modeling Biological Systems:: Principles and Applications Review

Modeling Biological Systems:: Principles and Applications

This book is a complete dissapointment.
It does not offer any real scientific physical models which then can be transformed in an algorithm and being simulated but is is merely a conglomerate of several statistical procedures commonly used in Biology for interpreting data (maybe copied by the author and collected from other books, as nothing that he presents is new!). This book does not offer any scientific, fundamental insight in how to really model and simulate properly complex biological systems, it is also written in a very unscientific, popular style. The mathematical level corresponds to High-School and as the author says in the preface: "The process of modeling biological systems is certainly not a science, but neither is it as unconstrained as the creation of a work of pure art that is evaluated solely on its esthetic content". I think that nonsense speaks for itself. This author should rather write novels instead of cobbling something together that gets the label "scientific" on the cover.
The book is not trash, the author does have collected some of the simplest "models" there are to describe collections of data in statistical terms, but this has NOTHING to do with proper scientific numerical and mathematical modeling and even less with scientific Computing in the field of biological complex systems, e.g. how to simulate membranes, proteins using Quantum Chemistry or Molecular dynamics techniques.
All in all I judge this book as a complete waste of money and as completely superfluous.

This is the second edition of a textbook currently published by Springer for a course in mathematical modeling and computer simulation for biologists at the advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate level. The audience for this edition is similar to that of the previous one: advanced level courses in computational biology, as well as researchers retooling themselves. This new edition includes a CD-ROM with real examples of models as teaching tools.

Functions Modeling Change: A Preparation for Calculus Review

We are up to chapter 5 in this book so far. Several people in the class have had to take it over several times now. The book is too hard...at least for a lot of people it is. The concepts are not presented clearly. It can be very hard to correlate the example problems to the homework problems. Even with the student solution manual (which does not have every odd #, but every other odd #, heh) I am lost. A big group of us get together for a total of 7 hours per week working on our homework with tutors and they are even lost! AHHHH. This book is horrible! Good luck to all whom have to take this course!
