Forecasting in Financial and Sports Gambling Markets: Adaptive Drift Modeling

This book, and 1999's "Analysis of sports forecasting" (ASF), seem to be Dr. Mallios's only works known to Google or found in Econlit database. The latter also includes ASF's review by Burton Malkiel, the author of "Random walk down Wall Street". Malkiel's review is broadly favorable; my opinion of the (very similar, I suspect) 2011 successor is not.
"Forecasting ... " gets more than one star for featuring plausible econometric modeling, and often being entertaining. However, the econometrics part is undone by piecemeal presentation of both "theory" and implementation. A simplistic ARMAX-type model is shown, and the author hops from one regression to the next, reporting a "good" prediction error rate (over *several* observations), and commenting on coefficient signs with sports anecdotes.
That's Chapters 7-11. The rest is research done on consultancy assignments (on flu mortality rates, for example), Dr. Mallios's thoughts on capitalism, finance, "technical analysis", financial literacy, etc. Swathes of text are borrowed - lots and lots of quotes - and/or included for no obvious reason. Lack of editorial discipline - of asking "why does this paragraph belong here?" - is remarkable for an (ex-) academic author, as is the disinterest in other people's research of the subject. (That may be a matter of reciprocity: try finding Dr. Mallios among the contributors to "Handbook of sports and lottery markets", published by North Holland - which, unlike Wiley, actually has a reputation to maintain). Then again, it is unusual to see a trained statistician OK a typesetting where the "hat" variables are displayed as "x^(t)", "y^(t)" etc.

Chemical Modeling: From Atoms to Liquids Review

Chemical Modeling: From Atoms to Liquids
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The stated goal of this book is to introduce the science of chemical modeling to newcomers. It assumes the reader has little knowledge of crystallography, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, or computer programming; the four fields upon which chemical modeling is built upon. As such, the book does an adequate job. The math is adequate and well-documented. There is even coverage of the numerous techniques used in chemical modeling. And there are relevant examples of how modeling is applied.
The book could be written better though. The text is written in first-person, and would flow better written in third-person. The figures and tables/charts are good. There are adequate references to other sources that expand upon what is covered in the text. All in all, this is a good text to use in undergraduate chemistry / materials science courses to introduce students to atomistic scale modeling.

Modeling MEMS and NEMS Review

Modeling MEMS and NEMS

This is among the finest books for modeling MEMS. Most other books give a mish-mash of fabrication and modeling, but you never figure out how to model!! This one is different. This is the gold standard for MEMS books to come.. I picked it up along with many other MEMS books from the library, never thought I would use it, but this is the ONLY book I use. Good even for the the advanced MEMS designer as a quick reference. But great for a new reader who wants to grasp the fundamental of modeling.

Designing small structures necessitates an a priori understanding of various device behaviors. The way to gain such understanding is to construct, analyze, and interpret the proper mathematical model.Through such models, Modeling MEMS and NEMS illuminates microscale and nanoscale phenomena, thereby facilitating the design and optimization of micro- and nanoscale devices. After some introductory material, a review of continuum mechanics, and a study of scaling, the book is organized around phenomena. Each chapter addresses a sequence of real devices that share a common feature. The authors abstract that feature from the devices and present the mathematical tools needed to model it. They construct, analyze, and interpret a series of models of increasing complexity, then at the end of the chapter, they return to one of the devices described, apply the model to it, and interpret the analysis. In the beginning, the world of microdevices was dominated by experimental work and the development of fabrication techniques. As it matures, optimization and innovative designs are moving to the forefront. Modeling MEMS and NEMS not only provides the practical background and tools needed to design and optimize microdevices but it also helps develop the intuitive understanding that can lead to developing new and better designs and devices.

Modeling Dynamic Climate Systems (With CD-ROM) Review

Modeling Dynamic Climate Systems (With CD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book aims to teach about climate modeling while presenting some fundamentals of atmospheric physics by providing numerous STELLA models ranging from a simple stability model of a leaky bucket to much more complex (and relevant) models for Rossby waves and El Nino. Though the models are not "rigorous", they are intended to show how simplifications can enhance understanding and how some simplifications meet the goals of the model while other times simplifications miss important aspects for accurate models.
For those who are looking for sophisticated programing and modeling approaches, they are sure to be disappointed. However, for those who are either trying to learn or teach basics of climate modeling to those with limited mathematical expertise or teaching students with such limited experience, this book will prove quite useful. The approximately 40 STELLA models included with the book guide the reader to an intuitive understanding of an Earth system approach of atmospheric science. I plan to use a number of examples with a group of students who have only a simple calculus background. Though the text has a 2001 copywrite and the CD-ROM was intended for an earlier version of STELLA, I found that the models could be translated to the newest versions of STELLA on a Macintosh through a fairly simple manipulations and help from software updates provided by High Performance Systems. The text would be useful for junior level classes in atmospheric science aimed at students in environmental science programs. It would be less useful for those with strong math skills majoring in a rigorous atmospheric science sequence, though it could provide such students with a much better conceptual understanding than they might receive in a more mathematically sophisticated class.

In the process of building and using models to comprehend the dynamics of the atmosphere, ocean and climate, the reader will learn how the different components of climate systems function, interact with each other, and vary over time. Topics include the stability of climate, Earths energy balance, parcel dynamics in the atmosphere, the mechanisms of heat transport in the climate system, and mechanisms of climate variability. Special attention is given to the effects of climate change. The book is accompanied by a cross-platform CD-ROM containing models and a run-time version of STELLA modeling software.

Much of the material here is well covered in other texts on probability. But Miller gives more emphasis on the modelling aspect. For this, the book has examples of some rather obscure probability distributions, that other, more standard texts tend to omit. Which is one attraction of the book.
But the main value of the book might be when we get past the introductory material about simple probability concepts. And where we deal with actually trying to model a given random process. For you as a researcher, what you deal with might not be in any of the textbooks. So how can you find an existing distribution, or, more to the point, make up one, that fits your data? A lot of books are frustratingly useless on this aspect. But Miller at least has some material that is informative.

Improve Your Probability of Mastering This TopicThis book takes an innovative approach to calculus-based probability theory, considering it within a framework for creating models of random phenomena. The author focuses on the synthesis of stochastic models concurrent with the development of distribution theory while also introducing the reader to basic statistical inference. In this way, the major stochastic processes are blended with coverage of probability laws, random variables, and distribution theory, equipping the reader to be a true problem solver and critical thinker.Deliberately conversational in tone, Probability is written for students in junior- or senior-level probability courses majoring in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or engineering. The book offers a lucid and mathematicallysound introduction to how probability is used to model random behavior in the natural world. The text contains the following chapters:* Modeling* Sets and Functions* Probability Laws I: Building on the Axioms* Probability Laws II: Results of Conditioning* Random Variables and Stochastic Processes* Discrete Random Variables and Applications in Stochastic Processes* Continuous Random Variables and Applications in Stochastic Processes* Covariance and Correlation Among Random VariablesIncluded exercises cover a wealth of additional concepts, such as conditional independence, Simpson's paradox, acceptance sampling, geometric probability, simulation, exponential families of distributions, Jensen's inequality, and many non-standard probability distributions.

Choice modeling is one of the most sophisticated market research techniques, but many companies don't use it because it seems too complicated and expensive. However, in many cases, the benefits outweigh the costs and the right vendor can make the process transparent. It's more predictive, actionable, and directly relevant to decisions that will increase return on investment. In Using Choice Modeling to Supercharge Your Business Chris Diener, senior vice president for research methods at Lieberman Research Worldwide, explains choice modeling in lay terms and uses many examples of help marketers understand the benefits of the technique. Diener stresses that choice modeling more closely represents the actual decisions that customers make when they are considering purchases. especially of big-ticket items. The technique is complicated because there are scores of different combinations that can be considered and it takes a certain amount of expertise to model these different combinations once survey data have been collected. Diener's step-by-step analysis of the process helps uninitiated marketers decide whether a choice modeling project will work in their situations, help managers explain it to their colleagues, and help marketing executives unlock the potential of their market research investment.

A Basic Introduction to Pollutant Fate and Transport : An Integrated Approach with Chemistry, Modeling, Risk Assessment, and Environmental Legislation Review

A Basic Introduction to Pollutant Fate and Transport : An Integrated Approach with Chemistry, Modeling, Risk Assessment, and Environmental Legislation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is well-intended. There is a need for accessible introductory material covering the range of chemical fate and transport topics of interest to those who are concerned with policy, or with science in related fields. After a casual look at it and reading the lauditory (but it turns out, misleading) editorial reviews, I adopted it for a graduate intro course for students in Public Health. Big mistake. There are several major flaws, the most pervasive of which is very poor editorial quality control for accuracy. Notational errors abound, which really frustrate a reader trying to develop a basic understanding. Formulae are plagued by typos, omissions, and misplaced exponents, parentheses, etc. Mis-statements are also present, whose nature makes me imagine that that section was written by an undergraduate with little comprehension of the material (for example, substitution of "insulation" for "ensolation" when describing atmospheric stability classification). Even basic data such as tables of chemical properties could not be relied upon to be accurate.
The book provides a DVD containing calculators for integrated mass balance differential equation solutions to some typical transport/decay problems. These were about 50% correct - some of them were simply wrong and gave output that could not be reconciled with a hand calculation (didn't anyone check??). Since the authors use these calculators and the algorithms they reflect as black box resources, and do not bother to derive or even reference the underlying solutions, the novice reader is really stuck.
My other criticisms are really simply a matter of preference. I found the coverage of air issues to be limited to the point of being useless. No discussion of volatilization from water to air or the reverse (other than a treatment of reaeration); no discussion of indoor air quality at all, although that is a natural easy application of the box models provided for lakes. The tilt of the authors toward inorganic contaminants is so pronounced that they make generalizations that are untrue for hydrophobic contaminants (without qualifying them). Personally, I also like to see better coverage of the relationship between chemical structure and environmental (equilibrium) behavior.
Overall, I think the intent and approach behind the book is great and it could have been a wonderful alternative to other options like the Hemond and Fechner-Levy text, or even to Schwarzenbach et al., but the execution is fatally flawed.

A uniquely accessible text on environmental modeling designed for both students and industry personnel
Pollutant fate and modeling are becoming increasingly important in both regulatory and scientific areas. However, the complexity of the software and models often act as an inhibitor to the advancement of water quality science.
A Basic Introduction to Pollutant Fate and Transport fills the need for a basic instructional tool for students and environmental professionals who lack the rigorous mathematical background necessary to derive the governing fate and transport equations. Taking a refreshingly simple approach to the subject that requires only a basic knowledge of algebra and first-year college chemistry, the book presents and integrates all of the aspects of fate and transport, including chemistry, modeling, risk assessment, and relevant environmental legislation; approaching each topic first conceptually before introducing the math necessary to model it.
The first half of the book is dedicated to the chemistry and physics behind the fate and transport models, while the second half teaches and reinforces the logical concepts underlying fate and transport modeling. This better prepares students for support jobs in the environmental arena surrounding chemical industry and Superfund sites.
Contributing to the book's ease of use are:
An extremely user-friendly software program, Fate, which uses basic models to predict the fate and transport of pollutants in lakes, rivers, groundwater, and atmospheric systems
The use of "canned" models to evaluate the importance of model parameters and sensitivity analysis
A wealth of easy-to-understand examples and problems
A chapter on environmental legislation in the United States and Europe
A set of lab exercises, as well as a downloadable set of teaching aids

A much-needed basic text for contemporary hydrology or environmental chemistry courses and support courses forthe environmental industry, this is a valuable desk reference for educators and industry professionals.

For a book that presumes to describe the use of a particular software (AMOS) for conducting Structural Equation Modeling, this book misses the mark by quite a bit. Many of the terms and windows figures the author uses do not correspond well to those actually used in AMOS. Also, the description of what the author is doing is often not as clear as one would hope, and I found myself often at a lost as to what the intent or purpose was for performing each step and why one may want to perform each procedure discussed. Lastly, this book spends the vast majority of its page space discussing factor analyses (confirmatory factor analysis) and the use of modification indices. While this may be of some importance to some researchers, the more theorectically and empirically meaningful discussion of assessing and comparing various causal models of association are tersely covered and and the rationale behind such analytical tools poorly explained. Also, the author seems to advocate for some practices in SEM that many other experts may not condone.

However this book does not talk about ISDA documentation and from the trading point of view. The book "Credit Derivatives: Risk Management, Trading and Investing by Geoff Chaplin" focuses more from the point of view of trading and ISDA documentation. Reading Chaplin's book after Chacko's book will take the reader into next step.
For the professional who want to become expert in modeling, the must read is "Credit Derivatives Pricing Models: Model, Pricing and Implementation by Philipp J.Schönbucher". The credit risk market is the fastest growing financial market in the world, attracting everyone from hedge funds to banks and insurance companies. Increasingly, professionals in corporate finance need to understand the workings of the credit risk market in order to successfully manage risk in their own organizations; in addition, some wish to move into the field on a full-time basis. Most books in the field, however, are either too academic for working professionals, or written for those who already possess extensive experience in the area. Credit Derivatives fills the gap, explaining the credit risk market clearly and simply, in language any working financial professional can understand. Harvard Business School faculty member George C. Chacko and his colleagues begin by explaining the underlying principles surrounding credit risk. Next, they systematically present today's leading methods and instruments for managing it. The authors introduce total return swaps, credit spread options, credit linked notes, and other instruments, demonstrating how each of them can be used to isolate risk and sell it to someone willing to accept it.

Modern, large-scale analog integrated circuits (ICs) are essentially composed of metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistors and their interconnections. As technology scales down to deep sub-micron dimensions and supply voltage decreases to reduce power consumption, these complex analog circuits are even more dependent on the exact behavior of each transistor. High-performance analog circuit design requires a very detailed model of the transistor, describing accurately its static and dynamic behaviors, its noise and matching limitations and its temperature variations. The charge-based EKV (Enz-Krummenacher-Vittoz) MOS transistor model for IC design has been developed to provide a clear understanding of the device properties, without the use of complicated equations. All the static, dynamic, noise, non-quasi-static models are completely described in terms of the inversion charge at the source and at the drain taking advantage of the symmetry of the device. Thanks to its hierarchical structure, the model offers several coherent description levels, from basic hand calculation equations to complete computer simulation model. It is also compact, with a minimum number of process-dependant device parameters.
Written by its developers, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of the EKV charge-based model of the MOS transistor for the design and simulation of low-power analog and RF ICs. Clearly split into three parts, the authors systematically examine:
the basic long-channel intrinsic charge-based model, including all the fundamental aspects of the EKV MOST model such as the basic large-signal static model, the noise model, and a discussion of temperature effects and matching properties;
the extended charge-based model, presenting important information for understanding the operation of deep-submicron devices;
the high-frequency model, setting out a complete MOS transistor model required for designing RF CMOS integrated circuits.

Practising engineers and circuit designers in the semiconductor device and electronics systems industry will find this book a valuable guide to the modelling of MOS transistors for integrated circuits. It is also a useful reference for advanced students in electrical and computer engineering.

A First Course in Scientific Computing: Symbolic, Graphic, and Numeric Modeling Using Maple, Java, Mathematica, and Fortran90
Average Reviews:

Landau takes a refreshingly different approach to teaching students scientific computation. The field can be considered as two parts. One, the older and more heavily used, is about the "traditional" numerical analysis. You crunch numbers, and you get numbers out. The other approach is symbolic algebra.
Usually a text only deals with one type. Here, he teaches both. Plus, for each type, he offers the choice of two languages. For the numerical analysis, there is Fortran, version 90, and Java. While the symbolic algebra is performed using Mathematica or Maple. Ecumenical indeed!
These are excellent choices of languages. Fortran still dominates legacy numerical analysis, with massive libraries of subroutines that one has to work with or maintain. While Java lets the student learn good object oriented practices.
And Mathematica and Maple are perhaps the most common symbolic packages available.

This book offers a new approach to introductory scientific computing. It aims to make students comfortable using computers to do science, to provide them with the computational tools and knowledge they need throughout their college careers and into their professional careers, and to show how all the pieces can work together. Rubin Landau introduces the requisite mathematics and computer science in the course of realistic problems, from energy use to the building of skyscrapers to projectile motion with drag. He is attentive to how each discipline uses its own language to describe the same concepts and how computations are concrete instances of the abstract.

Landau covers the basics of computation, numerical analysis, and programming from a computational science perspective. The first part of the printed book uses the problem-solving environment Maple as its context, with the same material covered on the accompanying CD as both Maple and Mathematica programs; the second part uses the compiled language Java, with equivalent materials in Fortran90 on the CD; and the final part presents an introduction to LaTeX replete with sample files.

Providing the essentials of computing, with practical examples, A First Course in Scientific Computing adheres to the principle that science and engineering students learn computation best while sitting in front of a computer, book in hand, in trial-and-error mode. Not only is it an invaluable learning text and an essential reference for students of mathematics, engineering, physics, and other sciences, but it is also a consummate model for future textbooks in computational science and engineering courses.

A broad spectrum of computing tools and examples that can be used throughout an academic career
Practical computing aimed at solving realistic problems
Both symbolic and numerical computations

"Modeling for Learning Organizations" builds off of the extensive experience of top professors and consultants using the SD tools to test strategies and build an understanding of firm and industry dynamics.
"Modeling" also includes a section overviewing the various simulation software packages available to modelers. Though developers like High-Performance Systems, Vensim, Pugh-Roberts, and PowerSim have made product enhancements to date, the sections from each company provide a great introduction to what is out there how each package can be applied.
The most valuable aspect of the book is probably in the case studies and methodological explorations of several authors. A number of key insights are offered as authors reflect upon the successes and shortcoming of the methods each chose to use to explore and develop models in a variety of business and public environments.
This is definitely a must have for any SD library.

To truly understand how complex business organizations function requires different tools than most managers have been given. Yet managers need methods to understand how their organization works in order to test policies, discover flaws in thinking, and find the hidden leveragepoints within the complex systems they manage. Through a system simulation, the dynamics of the whole system, not just the individual parts, becomes apparent. The outcome of current and future situations becomes possible to predict and with this information, managers can focus on the changes that need to be made. The distinguished contributors to Modeling for Learning Organizations include Jay W. Forrester, Peter Senge, and Arie De Geus. You will learn about leading applications such as:
Shell's work on modeling the oil producers.
The Management Flight Simulator, a computer-based case learning environment pioneered by John Sterman and others at MIT
The landmark Claims Learning Laboratory at Hanover Insurancecompanies.
For managers, professionals, academicians, and everyone who recognizes the profound implications of modeling, this book is an excellent resource. It offers a broad understanding of the modeling process, discusses a multitude of case studies, and provides a review of the most recent simulation software.

This is the best OpenGL book I have read so far.
I didn't have any knowledge about Computer Graphics and OpenGL and it take me through enough to understand them pretty well. It takes me step-by-step with many examples of how to learn from the very beginning to more advanced topics.
It has a tutorial to teach everyone to program the examples in Mac OS X and Windows. I have tried them on Lion and Windows 7 and they worked perfectly :)
The only think that I will wish about this book is that it would contain the answers, at least of the even exercises. I don't really how to resolve some of them.
I will appreciate if the autor could modify his web page with more content, like more examples, errata and the solutions of the exercises.

From geometric primitives to animation to 3D modeling to lighting and shading, Computer Graphics Through OpenGL: From Theory to Experiments is a comprehensive introduction to computer graphics that uses an active learning style to teach key concepts. Equally emphasizing theory and practice, the book provides an understanding not only of the principles of 3D computer graphics, but also the use of the OpenGL Application Programming Interface (API) to program 3D applications.Forming the undergraduate core of the book, the first fourteen chapters cover the concepts fundamental to 3D computer graphics and illustrate how to code fairly sophisticated 3D scenes and animation, including games and movies. The remaining chapters explore more advanced topics, such as the structure of curves and surfaces, applications of projective spaces and transformations, and programmable graphics pipelines. This textbook uses a hands-on, interactive approach that mixes theory and coding. Designed to be followed with a computer handy, the text makes the theory accessible by having students run clarifying code. Web ResourceThe book's website www.sumantaguha.com provides program source code that runs on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux platforms. It also includes a guide to installing OpenGL and executing the programs, special software to help run the experiments, and figures from the book. In addition, the website provides a discussion forum for interaction among users of the book.
