"Competency models that identify the skills, knowledge, and characteristics needed to perform a job have been in use for more than three decades. In the last five years, interest in them and their potential to help staffing and development efforts has increased dramatically among our client group. We believe this interest will continue to grow over the next few years due to three key, related trends-intensified competition, aggressive cost management and downsizing, and the proliferation of 360-degree feedback system (A. D. Lucia & R. Lepsinger / Preface xiii)."
In this invaluable study authors
* define what a competency model is, describe its components, and discuss some of their broad, general applications.
* examine how competency models can be applied within selection, training and development, appraisal, and succession planning systems to support an organization's business objectives.
* discuss establishing the performance criteria with which your organization measures success to better focus your data collection and analysis.
* describe specific action steps to follow during the development of the competency model from scratch.
* discuss various methods of data collection and how they can be used to increase the likelihood of identifying the knowledge, skills, and characteristics required to succeed in the job.
* describe the process of creating competency-based selection, training and development, appraisal, and succession planning systems.
* discuss the methods for converting the model into the necessary formats or tools to integrate the competencies into each step of human resource management.
This study is a "must" reading guide for HR professionals and line managers. I highly recommend.

Principles of Smoke Management Review

Principles of Smoke Management
Average Reviews:

An excellent book for designers of smoke management systems. Well laid out with many example calculations to guide the designer through the design process. The chapters on stairwell pressurisation and atrium smoke control are particularly good. The book does give an introduction to design fires and some basic fire dynamics, but designers should look to more detailed books on these topics for complex design. Designers should be aware that an Errata has been issued for this edition and they should obtain the Errata prior to embarking upon a design project.

Geographic Information Systems for Transportation: Principles and Applications (Spatial Information Systems)

Having been a student with Harvey Miller probably makes my review somewhat biased. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book if you're a student or professional in the field of GIS and need to know how GIS can be applied in transportation, or vice versa, knowing tranportation, this book will tell you what GIS can do for you. Mind you, this is not for the fainthearted, this is solid academic work and presumes some academic knowlegde prior to reading this book. It is specked with references that are hard to get, and you are likely to spend more time in the library reading up on the bibliography than digesting the actual text. Still, if GIS-T is your line of research, you cannot avoid having this book. It is by far one of the most comprehensive I have seen. It is clear that the authors posess solid knowledge and have covered a wide field and left nothing out. It may have a rather inhibitive price; in hindsight it was well worth the money spent.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): A Planning and Implementation Guide for Business and Technology Review

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): A Planning and Implementation Guide for Business and Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A surprising amount of the spending for information technology in virtually all organizations is spent on supporting, updating, integrating, or otherwise maintaining legacy systems. SOA is an attempt to define a generalized group of services oriented 'objects' (for lack of a better term) that have a well defined interface and output that is oriented to provide a business orjective.
Most books on SOA (do a search at Amazon) tend to be oriented around the web and the transfer of information between computers using various web protocols, especially SOAP and RSS. In essence these are putting the details before the concepts.
This is a book on the concepts, it is what we are trying to do with SOA more than the details of how to do it. It is more concerned with good business practices rather the details of implementation. It is particularly good at refraining from recommending any particular vendor or technology.
A question you have to ask yourself is, 'Is now the time?' The authors say yes, that despite the history of attempts like CORBA, COM/DCOM, etc. there is now enough industry momentum behind current techniques that it is clearly time for you to get started. This is one of those places where it is easy to predict the future, it is harder to get it right.
Still, I think the broad concepts brought out here will last, even if the details of the implementation do not. And these concepts is what this book is about.

Practical Financial Optimization: A Library of GAMS Models (The Wiley Finance Series)
Average Reviews:

Pay $80, then suffer through Wiley-standard piss-poor unhelpful layout, inadequate discussion of language syntax and capabilities, and cryptic and barely commented formulas - asking yourself why you would do optimization in GAMS, software that looks as modern and friendly as Richard Nixon. As I understand, the optimization problems being solved in this volume are presented in another book by the same authors; this one is going back to Amazon.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Practical Financial Optimization: A Library of GAMS Models (The Wiley Finance Series)

In Practical Financial Optimization: A Library of GAMS Models, the authors provide a diverse set of models for portfolio optimization, based on the General Algebraic Modelling System. ‘GAMS' consists of a language which allows a high-level, algebraic representation of mathematical models and a set of solvers – numerical algorithms – to solve them. The system was developed in response to the need for powerful and flexible front-end tools to manage large, real-life models.
The work begins with an overview of the structure of the GAMS language, and discusses issues relating to the management of data in GAMS models. The authors provide models for mean-variance portfolio optimization which address the question of trading off the portfolio expected return against its risk. Fixed income portfolio optimization models perform standard calculations and allow the user to bootstrap a yield curve from bond prices. Dedication models allow for standard portfolio dedication with borrowing and re-investment decisions, and are extended to deal with maximisation of horizon return and to incorporate various practical considerations on the portfolio tradeability. Immunization models provide for the factor immunization of portfolios of treasury and corporate bonds.
The scenario-based portfolio optimization problem is addressed with mean absolute deviation models, tracking models, regret models, conditional VaR models, expected utility maximization models and put/call efficient frontier models. The authors employ stochastic programming for dynamic portfolio optimization, developing stochastic dedication models as stochastic extensions of the fixed income models discussed in chapter 4. Two-stage and multi-stage stochastic programs extend the scenario models analysed in Chapter 5 to allow dynamic rebalancing of portfolios as time evolves and new information becomes known. Models for structuring index funds and hedging interest rate risk on international portfolios are also provided.
The final chapter provides a set of ‘case studies': models for large-scale applications of portfolio optimization, which can be used as the basis for the development of business support systems to suit any special requirements, including models for the management of participating insurance policies and personal asset allocation.
The title will be a valuable guide for quantitative developers and analysts, portfolio and asset managers, investment strategists and advanced students of finance.

What an inspired, clear, and exciting guide to improving our design/construction processes. I am a third through the book but can't see myself beginning a new project without implementing what I have learned so far. Therefore, we have planned our first Goal Setting Workshop for a new project near the end of this month, and I am tasked with serving as a process facilitator and presenter of the Integrative Design Process/Systems Thinking Concept. I see great power in the many stories and pictures in your book.
Thank you for sharing your talents and passion, Michael

Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management (Frank J Fabozzi Series) Review

Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management (Frank J Fabozzi Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quick fact:
1) Highly recommand this book to serious Quants.
2) Graduate lever math is required for serious reader.
3) Good reference book and good for self-study
4) Well written, easy read.
5) worth the money.
The field of quantitative techniques have developed so much in the last 10 years, but almost no book cover enough serious topics about these new directions. I had already learn a bit of the robust techniques while working, including robust estimates, robust portfolio construction, error control, bayesian estimates and others. But those are all picked up in pieces, at different times, and with much research efforts. So you can imagine my delight to see a book that covers a lot of the pieces concisely.
This book itself is very well written, occasionally misspelled math labels are easily corrected by more math inclined reader, and will not interfare with casual reading. Like many of Fabozzi books, overall organization is slightly loose, so that you can start any chapter in the book and still get pretty much decent view about that subject. But better written for quants than some of Fabozzi's early books (which are mainly used as reference books)
what is missing in this book?
just one: sometimes, reference papers or books are given even though a little more details would save serious reader a lot more time. Yes, I know, those are advance topics, still would like to see them as a serious reader. Maybe as appendix for relevent chapers.
Over all, worth every penny of it.

Praise for Robust Portfolio Optimization and Management"In the half century since Harry Markowitz introduced his elegant theory for selecting portfolios, investors and scholars have extended and refined its application to a wide range of real-world problems, culminating in the contents of this masterful book. Fabozzi, Kolm, Pachamanova, and Focardi deserve high praise for producing a technically rigorous yet remarkably accessible guide to the latest advances in portfolio construction."--Mark Kritzman, President and CEO, Windham Capital Management, LLC"The topic of robust optimization (RO) has become 'hot' over the past several years, especially in real-world financial applications. This interest has been sparked, in part, by practitioners who implemented classical portfolio models for asset allocation without considering estimation and model robustness a part of their overall allocation methodology, and experienced poor performance. Anyone interested in these developments ought to own a copy of this book. The authors cover the recent developments of the RO area in an intuitive, easy-to-read manner, provide numerous examples, and discuss practical considerations. I highly recommend this book to finance professionals and students alike."--John M. Mulvey, Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering, Princeton University

This is an outstanding piece of work. It is a thorough and clear presentation of the state-of-the-art methods developed by the authors. It articulates a clean vision of a comprehensive framework for the field, and shows how that framework can be use to solve problems. It's destined to be a classic.

A state-of-the-art presentation of spatio-temporal processes, bridging classic ideas with modern hierarchical statistical modeling concepts and the latest computational methods
From understanding environmental processes and climate trends to developing new technologies for mapping public-health data and the spread of invasive-species, there is a high demand for statistical analyses of data that take spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal information into account. Statistics for Spatio-Temporal Data presents a systematic approach to key quantitative techniques that incorporate the latest advances in statistical computing as well as hierarchical, particularly Bayesian, statistical modeling, with an emphasis on dynamical spatio-temporal models.
Cressie and Wikle supply a unique presentation that incorporates ideas from the areas of time series and spatial statistics as well as stochastic processes. Beginning with separate treatments of temporal data and spatial data, the book combines these concepts to discuss spatio-temporal statistical methods for understanding complex processes.
Topics of coverage include:
Exploratory methods for spatio-temporal data, including visualization, spectral analysis, empirical orthogonal function analysis, and LISAs
Spatio-temporal covariance functions, spatio-temporal kriging, and time series of spatial processes
Development of hierarchical dynamical spatio-temporal models (DSTMs), with discussion of linear and nonlinear DSTMs and computational algorithms for their implementation
Quantifying and exploring spatio-temporal variability in scientific applications, including case studies based on real-world environmental data

Throughout the book, interesting applications demonstrate the relevance of the presented concepts. Vivid, full-color graphics emphasize the visual nature of the topic, and a related FTP site contains supplementary material. Statistics for Spatio-Temporal Data is an excellent book for a graduate-level course on spatio-temporal statistics. It is also a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the fields of applied mathematics, engineering, and the environmental and health sciences.

SOA Principles of Service Design Review

SOA Principles of Service Design
Average Reviews:

Where do I start?
On the positive side. It is the only computer book I have read in years that is completely free of typing and grammatical errors.
On the negative:
Thomas Erls' previous book contains lots of valuable information about services. This book does not.
A good design book would have contained more.
Every time he starts to discuss something of depth, it is always beyond the scope of the book, contained in the companion Design Patterns book or in a book that he has yet to write, or he references another chapter containing a paragraph of clarification. The OOAD section is great, but that's not the topic of the book.
You know those articles where the text is great, but the diagrams confusing and innane. Well in this book, the diagrams are inane and so is their description. Take for example, page 327. There is a drawing of a stationary car and a moving car. The text reads "State refers to the general condition of something. A car that is moving is in a state of motion, whereas a car that is not moving is in a stationary state." What enlightenment. Another figure, Figure 8.10 ( I know it well ), is repeated 4 times on two pages, and at various other places, with only changes to the text. I can't help but feeling, that if I read all of the following books that this one promotes, I may get one book's worth of content.
I know that my review differs from the others. I have extensive experience in design ( although not SOA design ), and found most of what was discussed repetetive and obvious. Also I can't help but notice when I look at other reviewers' profiles, they have only ever reviewed one book, or at most two.
I will probably buy, or at least checkout the SOA patterns book ( referenced extensively in this one as published, but lost in book desert ). I hope it contains the content that this book should have contained.

Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate Review

Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is more significance to the title than one may initially assume. Some "play" can be taken much too seriously as when overzealous parents scream at their children as they begin to compete in organized sports; other "play" is not treated seriously enough as when a corporation discourages (perhaps even punishes) innovative thinking unless it has an immediate and favorable impact on the bottom line. Many executives, thus abused, may then vent their frustrations by behaving boorishly at a Little League game.
In the Foreword, Tom Peters quotes Schrage's assertion that "Innovative prototypes generate innovative teams. Not vice versa." Peters then observes that, in Serious Play, the "big idea" is that "the prototyping process becomes the scaffolding" for an enterprise's approach to innovation. As Schrage explains, "I have always enjoyed rehearsals more than performances." I suggest that you keep that statement clearly in mind as you proceed through the book. It reveals much about Schrage's perspective on the correlations between prototypes and innovation.
Here is how the book is organized: Part I: Getting Real, Part II: Model Behavior, and Part III:S(t)imulating Innovation. Schrage then provides a User's Guide and Bibliography. Throughout the book, he shares a wealth of real-world experience which explains what innovation is, and, what it can help to accomplish, not only with the design of a new product or service but also with the formulation of new and better ways for people to work together. The key is simulation; moreover, "not just playing with representations of ideas" (lots of ideas, the more the better) but "playing with the various versions of representations of ideas."
Near the end of the final chapter, Schrage poses a number of critically important questions, suggesting that the "best hope for answering these questions, or coping with their implications, is to build or grow models and play with them seriously." The world's best companies simulate to innovate. For example: American Airlines, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric, IBM, IDEO, Walt Disney, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, and Royal Dutch Shell. Schrage believes that the creative tensions between innovators who design and innovators who evolve "will likely result in breakthroughs in products, services, and their yet-to-be-anticipated hybrids." So, why not prototype how to prototype? Why not play simulation games which reveal new and better ways to simulate?
Tom Peters describes Serious Play as "simply the best book on innovation I've ever read." I agree. Perhaps you will, also.

Although there are many advanced and specialized texts and handbooks on algorithms, until now there was no book that focused exclusively on the wide variety of data structures that have been reported in the literature. The Handbook of Data Structures and Applications responds to the needs of students, professionals, and researchers who need a mainstream reference on data structures by providing a comprehensive survey of data structures of various types.Divided into seven parts, the text begins with a review of introductory material, followed by a discussion of well-known classes of data structures, Priority Queues, Dictionary Structures, and Multidimensional structures. The editors next analyze miscellaneous data structures, which are well-known structures that elude easy classification. The book then addresses mechanisms and tools that were developed to facilitate the use of data structures in real programs. It concludes with an examination of the applications of data structures. The Handbook is invaluable in suggesting new ideas for research in data structures, and for revealing application contexts in which they can be deployed. Practitioners devising algorithms will gain insight into organizing data, allowing them to solve algorithmic problems more efficiently.

Introduction to Connectionist Modelling of Cognitive Processes Review

Introduction to Connectionist Modelling of Cognitive Processes

for 2 years i have been searching for textbooks on artificial intelligence that contain actual skills and techniques you can use here and now. so many books on artificial intelligence seem to be all sizzle and no steak. this book is all steak.
finally i have found a book that says "this is what we know how to do. this is how it works. this is how YOU do it." the things that can be done with the information in this book are quite astonishing.
although this book is exclusively about the design and funcion of connectionist neural networks, (rather than the construction of them), the simulator it supplies is quite frankly exellent.
the book covers many useful topics including the basics of facial recognition, voice recognition, language acquisition, and prototype extraction, as well as delving into various other human cognitive process simulations such as episodal memory formation.
i think so highly of this book that i am going to purchase a second copy in the near future, just in case something happens to the first one (which is already falling apart from the amount of use its been getting).
my future purchases for artificial intelligence books will not be made from the artificial intelligence category, but rather, cognitive science, computational nueroscience, and anything written by the authors of this book (Peter McLeod, Kim Plunkett & Edmund T. Rolls).

Connectionism is a way of modeling how the brain uses streams of sensory inputs to understand the world and produce behavior, based on cognitive processes which actually occur. This book describes the principles, and their application to explaining how the brain produces speech, forms memories and recognizes faces, how intellect develops, and how it deteriorates after brain damage. The models range from some well-known classics to others at the frontiers of current research. Also included is a disk with the software for running tlearn, a user-friendly simulator for connectionist modeling of cognitive processes, which will run on either PCs or Macs. Written by leading researchers in their field, this first up-to-date textbook on connectionist modeling, will provide an essential and accessible introduction to the field.

Wireless Information Highways Review

The book has papers by various authors that explore the problems in wireless or mobile computing. You might naively think that cellphones work, so doesn't that prove the thesis? Certainly, cellphones are vital to this discussion, in part because the cellphone networks underwrote the research and development that proved that one type of mobile network is practical and easy to use.
But there may well be other types of networks. For remote Internet access, say. And when users move from cell to cell, the problems of updating the user on the network are not simple. The book also goes into how to efficiently send non-trivial amounts of data to a moving user. Caching issues can be very difficult.
The book has many challenges that you might want to research.

Elements of Influence: The Art of Getting Others to Follow Your Lead
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How can you best persuade potential donors to contribute money to a cause, convince the boss to give you a raise, compel people to vote for the candidate you favour, or get a teenager to keep her room clean? Terry Bacon aims to answer these kinds of everyday influence challenges in this book. Influence is part of nearly every communication and occurs in virtually every human interaction.
The author describes ten ethical influence techniques:
*Logical persuading - the most frequently used technique, but not always effective because nothing human beings do is entirely rational.
*Legitimizing - essentially involving appealing to authority, a technique which works only in situations where people respect authority.
*Exchanging - offering others something in exchange for what you want, a useful technique for those who do not have any other form of power.
*Stating - asserting your views or positions, the simplest way of trying to influence someone else.
*Socializing - building rapport and trust through interpersonal interactions, one of the most effective influencing techniques.
*Appealing to relationship - family and close friends are most likely to help when you need immediate assistance.
*Consulting - asking questions which might provoke insight and prompt change.
*Alliance building - providing social proof by demonstrating that others are in favour of a proposition or action.
*Appealing to values - an appeal to the heart rather than the head, inspiring people to action.
*Modelling - acting as a role model or teaching or coaching people, a technique used by people who are skilled at influencing others.
While I found the author's descriptions of the ethical influence techniques and those from the dark side (Avoiding, Manipulating, Intimidation and Threatening) useful, the process of reading the book was not as fluent as I would have liked. Most of the anecdotes which the author used were quite interesting, but some were rather abrupt and less relevant than others. The author indicates that most of his assertions are based on a survey which has been taken by more than 300,000 people from many different countries, but the assertion that "logical persuading" is the most common influence technique in every country in the world other than New Zealand where "socializing" is more important seems peculiar, and the material provided in the book and on the author's website are not sufficient to assess the validity of the results.

About the book: We succeed in business and in life when we influence how others think, feel, and act: getting them to accept our point of view, follow our lead, join our cause, feel our excitement, or buy our products and services. The act of influencing is such a part of our daily lives that we often don't even realize when we (or others) are doing it. But to succeed, we need to know how influence works...and how to use it. Influencing effectively requires adaptability, perceptiveness, and insight into other people and cultures. Based on 20 years of research, "Elements of Influence" shows readers how to: understand why people allow themselves to be influenced and why they resist; choose the right approach for each situation; be influential when they have no formal authority; and, succeed in every kind of organization even in other countries. Filled with exercises and practical applications, this book shows how anyone can increase his or her influence to achieve greater success. About the Author: Terry R. Bacon (Durango, CO) is the founder of Lore International Institute, a widely respected executive development firm recently acquired by Korn/Ferry International. He is now the scholar in residence in that firm and is the author of many books including "Powerful Proposals" (9780814472323), "What People Want", and "The Elements of Power" (9780814415115).

On some pages, the powerpoint slides for the book do not even match with the text of the book. This is the sixth edition of this textbook. I consider it inexcusable that the book has hundreds of typos even after being published for more than ten years. As another reviewer pointed out, the additional material that is needed for the book -like SQL schemas- do not even exist in the book's website- contrary to what the book claims.
