I'm entirely new to 3D modeling and animation. I found this book to be exceptionally well written. The author provides a clear and concise explanation of the principles of 3D computer graphics, with easy-to-understand examples throughout. As stated in other reviews, it is not software specific. If you are looking for an introductory but thorough 3D primer, I recommend this book without reservation. It should provide a solid foundation for those who have little or no prior computer graphics experience.

Two-Sided Matching: A Study in Game-Theoretic Modeling and Analysis (Econometric Society Monographs) Review

Two-Sided Matching: A Study in Game-Theoretic Modeling and Analysis (Econometric Society Monographs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is totally dedicated to matching theory. The book in itself is rather general, it doesn't focus on any particular application, and discusses matching as a general abstract theory. Therefore the book can be used by both micro- and macro people equally. It basically covers the problem of one-to-one and one-to-many matchings and tries to explain when equilibriums exist and if matches are unique or non-unique and comes with algorithms or constructive methods to actually do the matching. The structure of the book is mostly like math books and at each step presents an algorithm or a theorem or lemma that states a result. In most cases the proof comes afterwards. However this doesn't undermine the practicality of the book as you can easily locate the algorithm or theorem that embodies your required result and just use it. In my opinion this is one of those books you want to keep on your shelf and refer to every now and then when need be.

Two-sided matching provides a model of search processes such as those between firms and workers in labor markets or between buyers and sellers in auctions. This book gives a comprehensive account of recent results concerning the game-theoretic analysis of two-sided matching. The focus of the book is on the stability of outcomes, on the incentives that different rules of organization give to agents, and on the constraints that these incentives impose on the ways such markets can be organized. The results for this wide range of related models and matching situations help clarify which conclusions depend on particular modeling assumptions and market conditions, and which are robust over a wide range of conditions.

In teaching structural equation modeling in a doctoral-level graduate class, I found Kelloway's book one of the most useful resources. Despite its title, the book is not only about LISREL. The initial chapters provide an excellent overview of the science (and art) of structural equation modeling. Kelloway provides probably a better summary than most other books on the topic.

This book is a wonderful guide to understanding a good range of basics about sem, getting models to work with Amos, and interpreting your output. You will need to be familiar with one of the stats packages that Amos is compatible with. Very much user-friendly in this complicated topic. All of the statistically-related and theory-related aspects are well-referenced, so you can find sources to reference for different aspects of sem. A great book to fill the gap between the Amos user's manual and books on sem in general. (contact Erlbaum about educ pricng.)

This book illustrates the ease with which AMOS 4.0 can be used to address research questions that lend themselves to structural equation modeling (SEM). This goal is achieved by: 1) presenting a nonmathematical introduction to the basic concepts and applications of structural equation modeling; 2) demonstrating basic applications of SEM using AMOS 4.0; and 3) highlighting features of AMOS 4.0 that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through 10 SEM applications from model specification to estimation to the assessment and interpretation of the output. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by:a statement of the hypothesis being tested;a schematic representation of the model under study;the use and function of a wide variety of icons and pull-down menus;a full explanation of related AMOS Graphic input models and output files;a model input file based on AMOS BASIC; andthe published reference from which each application was drawn.

Probability Theory and Statistical Inference: Econometric Modeling with Observational Data Review

Probability Theory and Statistical Inference: Econometric Modeling with Observational Data
Average Reviews:

This book is absolutely remarkable.
It presents the material traditionally taught in the second-year statistics (but actually goes well beyond, e.g. stochastic processes) and will be of interest to all people interested to (re-)learn statistics well, either undergraduates, or advanced students of any level. Professors should also read it maybe use it in class. Students will thank them.
The author took more than 14 years to polish it, and I would bet that scholars of pedagogy will put this book as an example of the highest possible level of their discipline. I would also bet that this book will have a long and brilliant career in statistical education. On gets the feeling that the author gave the same care and energy to the elaboration of this book as people commonly give to research.
The author is also a man with a mission. In his preface, one can read with pleasure and disbelief a passionate attack on the dumbing-down of undergraduate education in Europe and America. Having taught undergrads in commerce with the "predigested pap" he is talking about, I can really relate to the frustration of the author. There is no dilution of material or dumbing down here: all the ugly details are given, which makes that book not only a pedagogical tool but also a great reference.
There is no book on the market that is so polished in both presentation and discussion, that exposes intermediate stats at such an intelligent, comprehensive level, and finally that uses the historical development to project such clarity on the actual state of the science. I would say the closest competitor to this book is the great volume "Intermediate Statistics" by Dale Poirier, which has more econometrics and which might be a bit more comprehensive on the bayesian side, but the main focus of this one is on UNDERSTANDING and SYNTHESIZING. By the way, the focus of this book is statistics, not econometrics, despite the fact that the author has written extensively in econometrics.
I wish I would be an undergrad again and re-learn statistics with this book. Nevertheless, readers of all levels will learn something from it.
Ah, and the price is right. Value for your money!

This major new textbook is intended for students taking introductory courses in probability theory and statistical inference. The primary objective of this book is to establish the framework for the empirical modeling of observational (nonexperimental) data. The text is extremely student friendly, with pathways designed for semester usage, and although aimed primarily at students at second-year undergraduate level and above studying econometrics and economics, Probability Theory and Statistical Inference will also be useful for students in other disciplines that make extensive use of observational data, including finance, biology, sociology and psychology.

This is absolute a bible book for any person who want to learn Gibbs sampler and simulated annealing seriously. The format of this book, though full of mathematical equations, is very self-evident and concise. Nothing is missing and nothing is redundent. It is an enjoyable journey to follow the logic and principle in this book, with all your attention in. There are full of in-depth discussion in all aspect of the Gibbs sampler, simulated annealing, from the visiting scheme to cooling schedule, and parallel algorithms. The references are excellent too. The author seems to have read all publications till 1995 about this topic and give an excellent detailed and in-depth survey in his book. At the end of your reading, you would have love the mathematical form the author used. Without these tools, many discussions in this book will be just impossible and groundless. I personally have read this book for several times.

Very good and concise material. It goes from Simulation theory and basis to advanced subject in the matter of systems simulation and in specific in the subject of Discrete Event and Agent Based Simulation. Its sin, as far as I can analyse it, relies on specific commentaries on just one Discrete Event Simulation tool, ARENA. There are a lot of others which could be subject to comparisons or others.

Modeling Bounded Rationality (Zeuthen Lecture Book Series) Review

Modeling Bounded Rationality (Zeuthen Lecture Book Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very well written in terms of technical coverage and originality of modelling bounded rationality and its application to game theory. However, the author develops most of his theories from either assumption and speculation or no justification at all in terms of formally depicting human rationality. It would have been a much more powerful book if there was a greater coverage of empirical evidence and bridging between psychology, artificial intelligence and economics. This lop-sided approach of modelling using solely game theoretic terminology and concepts ambiguous in their relevancy to simulating human thought and behaviour. However, there are some chapters, such as the one on knowledge representation and the other on limited memory that are the exception to this. Overall though, the book is still quite innovative and worth a read.

The notion of bounded rationality was initiated in the 1950's by Herbert Simon. In this book the author defines models of bounded rationality as those in which elements of the process of choice are explicitly embedded. The book focuses on the challenges of modelling bounded rationality, rather than on substantial economic implications. In the first part of the book the author considers the modelling of choice. After discussing some psychological findings, he proceeds to the modelling of procedural rationality, knowledge, memory, the choice of what to know and group decisions. In the second part, he discusses the fundamental difficulties of modelling bounded rationality in games. He begins with the modelling of a game with procedural rational players and then surveys repeated games with complexity considerations. He ends with a discussion of computability constraints in games. The final chapter includes a critique by Herbert Simon of the author's methodology and the author's response.

It's one of the best technical books I have ever bought. It's very easy to read, gives very good advice and covers the whole subjet. I also like that the author does not try to sell any process simulator. I hate it when an author tries to sell products with his/her books. This one is very good, because you're helped regardless of the process simulator you prefer.
I recommend buying this book very much.

This is by far the best book on the topic I have found. If you plan to design or model any vehicle, but in particular a hybrid or electric vehicle, I recommend you own this book.
Specifically, a large portion of the mathematical models required for design-level calculations are available directly from the text. The text is very concise, making good use of external citations to remain thorough. Finally, the optimization case studies are very helpful in understanding hybrid design goals.
