Ship Models From Kits: Basic and Advanced Techniques for Small Scales
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ship models from Kits By David Griffith is a great resource for the begining as well as expert ship modeler. David reviews techniques for both injection molded plastic and resin models. He does a particularly good job showing how to handle and install photo etch partys even the "fiddly" bits as he puts it. He also demonstrates how to make rigging to scale using fly fishing filament and scale anchor "chain" from plaited thin metal wire.
He reviews the strengths and weaknesses of most major resin, injection molded plastic ship model suppliers as well as well as after market PE and resin part suppliers. The photographs in this book are virtually all in color and stunning. All in all, certainly the best plastic and resin ship model "how to" book in a long time. Highly recommended

The world of model kits has undergone a revolution, with new techniques in injection molding vastly improving the scale accuracy and surface detail of the standard plastic kit and new material producing top-quality resin models. In ship modeling, this has resulted in a new form of the hobby midway between traditional build-from-the-box simplicity and the time-consuming demands of fabricating everything from scratch. This new manual comprehensively demonstrates these new innovative techniques. Designed for modelers wishing to achieve the best results from their ship kits in the 1:700 to 1:350 range of scales, it uses 200 step-by-step color photographs to take the reader through the building of two models, one in plastic and one in resin, from basic construction, fittings, and detailing, to painting, finishing, and display. This book is an essential guide to a contemporary approach to model making.

Understanding Credit Derivatives and Related Instruments (Academic Press Advanced Finance) Review

Understanding Credit Derivatives and Related Instruments (Academic Press Advanced Finance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a financial engineering graduate student with professional experience in corporate and structured finance. I first read this book before I knew anything about the subject and found it very accessible. This is not a technical introduction to credit derivatives, nor will it be particularly useful to quants (other than perhaps as a quick reference to a couple concepts), however this book does an admirable job of explaining and linking the world of CD practice with academic theory. For anyone who doesn't have a derivatives background, but is able to understand mid-level mathematical concepts, this book is very good. It is clear, concise and is a great place to start for an introduction to CD that is not overly pedantic and offers motivation for further inquiry into the area.
If you are looking for a more technical and comprehensive book on credit modeling (which forms the basis of most CD valuation) then I recommend Jeff Bohn's "Active Credit Portfolio Management in Practice" which has in depth discussions about many of the issues in Bonfim's book as well as much more.
Nonetheless, having read and purchased many books on CD this one is one of the best due to its brevity, concision and practical robustness.

Standard & Poor's Fundamentals of Corporate Credit Analysis Review

Standard and Poor's Fundamentals of Corporate Credit Analysis
Average Reviews:

I had the pleasure of working with one of the authors 15 years ago. But don't let that sway you. I truly appreciate the scope and effort put into this book. We will use it as an outline for how our analysts should approach analyzing a credit. Chapter 3 alone is worth the price of admission as the authors list the elusive "qualitative" factors that go into a credit rating, beyond what the ratios tell you it should be. While the book barely scratches the surface of certain analytical methods (the Merton Model got 1/2 a page), and it is written more for the layman or student, I still learned many things. And I've been in the business 20+ years. The prior reviewer, and many others will say they wished they wrote this book. I will too. I even briefly started my own version recently. But I first turned to S&P's ratings criteria as an outline. As such, the right people wrote this book. The authors fully used the vast resources and data mining of S&P. This certainly feels like a team effort. The telecom analyst wrote a piece on the rapid decline of telecom credits in 2000-2002, and other professionals added real life examples. The book organizes itself in the top down approach to analysis. It starts with sovereign risk, then moves to industry, then company business/competitive risk. It then highlights the ratios to look for, and also gives data on seniority and recovery values for specific levels of debt. It then uses these tools to analyze a fictional company. It ends with case studies that cover M&A, sovereign risk and other topical reviews that act as a real life summary to what you just learned. Highly recommended. Well done.

Bill Horan's Military Modelling Masterclass Review

Bill Horan's Military Modelling Masterclass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's difficult to quantify Bill Horan's contribution to historical figure modelling. His sculpting and painting set a standard by which other work was judged for at least a decade and this title continues to be a source of inspiration for me six years on. The author's steady improvement over the years (including his early, modest, efforts) is documented, which I found fascinating and should provide a spur to improvement for any dedicated modeller.
This is well written in the author's distinctive style and extensively illustrated with colour photos including a number of step-by-step sequences. In addition to many of Bill's incredible 54mm single figures, vignettes and dioramas there are numerous pictures of the work of other noted miniaturists.
Beginning with a chapter on painting a single stock figure (David Grieve's 100mm Sergeant, 79th Highlanders) the progressive photos clearly show the author's enamel-painting style, complementing the detailed written account and 15 pages showing the work of other artists round off the chapter. Chapter two covers conversion and scratchbuilding, beginning with one of the author's trademark 54mm sculpts (a Confederate infantryman in this case) built from a commercial head, resin parts, wire and putty. The text covers materials, tools and posing before detailing the techniques used. The finished figure (shown approximately four times lifesize in one view) highlights the extremely high finish and just how much additional detail can be achieved at the painting stage. 25 pages of single figures by the author and others finish off the chapter. Chapter three is on vignettes, with a detailed look at the creation of the author's "Fight For The Flag" with 13 pages of additional photos of vignettes rounding out the chapter. Chapter four covers perhaps the most impressive side of figure modelling, dioramas, with an in-depth look at the creation of the noted "Ghosts Of Chillianwallah" and also includes photos of the author's legendary "Last Stand At Gandamak" from 1988. The final chapter is on mounted figures and dioramas with "A Cloud Of Red", an exquisite three-horse vignette depicting the charge of the 16th Lancers at Aliwal, covered in detail. Eight pages of photos of top-notch mounted subjects complete the book. Although only touched on lightly in the text, careful study of the groundwork on the author's pieces will benefit the reader in this under-appreciated area of the hobby.
For anyone interested in figure modelling, an absolute must-have from an acknowledged master.

Design of Enterprise Systems: Theory, Architecture, and Methods
Design of Enterprise Systems is simple and straight to the point. The information provided is well documented and summarized. The author provides various examples which give you a solid base to understand the concepts thoroughly. At the end of each chapter there are concept and exercise questions that will help you verify your knowledge of the subject matter. The only thing missing in this book is that the exercise problems do not include potential solutions. While I do understand that Designing an Enterprise System depends on the problem and point of view of the observer, having a general guide to answering the exercises would have been helpful.
From my point of view, this book was designed well for students; guiding them step-by-step through different topics. For professionals, the book also stands as a useful reference guide.
This books includes the following chapters: Enterprise Engineering, systems theory, modeling concepts, Enterprise design methodology, Enterprise architecture, Enterprise analysis and design methodology, strategy, problem formulation and requirements, generate and evaluate alternatives, process modeling, queuing theory, process design, information modeling, information design, organization design, enterprise technology and integration.
I highly recommend it for anyone studying enterprise systems. However, if you are new to this topic the only problem would be the lack of answers to the exercise questions.

Switch-Mode Power Supplies Spice Simulations and Practical Designs Review

Switch-Mode Power Supplies Spice Simulations and Practical Designs

Christophe Basso worked very hard giving years of his life to produce the best Switch-Mode Power Supply book available, by far. I have a large collection of books on SMPS and although many are very good books, they are not nearly as complete or practical as Basso's book. He derives all his equations and then shows many real world example designs from start to finish. In my opinion and the opinion of many power electronics professionals and power electronics college students, the averaged switch model is the easiest to create and most intuitive to understand and use. Basso has digested the best information from the best references and then creatively enhanced many models and invented new SPICE models/sub-circuits you need for large and small signal analysis and simulations with the SPICE of your choice. His knowledge of creating analog behavioral models (ABM) that perform just like the real components or circuit functions, is amazing. He created ABM PWMs from individual ABM components. Everything he creates, he verifies. You buy this book at a bargain price and get a CD with all the models/sub-circuits you need to check your existing designs and start new designs with the highest confidence. Once you look at his ABMs, you will want to create some of your own because it is so much fun. In a short time, I've used his models/sub-circuits and his techniques with PSPICE to identify lack of or no phase margin in Switch-Mode Power Supplies for a huge corporation. I have many more power supplies to analyze/simulate and several new ones to design.
I've worked as a power electronics engineer for many years and I'm so thankful to Christophe Basso for working so hard and smart to produce the best Switch-Mode Power Supply book ever written. Very thorough and very practical. Get this book and apply Basso's knowledge, techniques, and SPICE models/sub-circuits to your designs and you will never have another unstable Switch-Mode or Linear Power Supply.

Publisher's description exaggerates the book's pedagogical value; it is a collection of short essays describing applications, and authors do not seem especially concerned with theory. Quality is variable, editorial effort missing-in-action (typos galore) - a typical Wiley book, and an easy return decision.

Quantitative Equity Investing: Techniques and Strategies (Frank J. Fabozzi) Review

Quantitative Equity Investing: Techniques and Strategies (Frank J. Fabozzi)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this Great Recession, quants have become notorious again, since Black Money, October 19th, 1987. At that time, it is called "program trading". Fast forward to May 6th, 2010, the "flash crash" happened, causing Dow to drop more than 1000 points in couple of minutes. Now, it is called high-frequency trading, which accounts for 40% to 70% of all trading on every stock market in U.S.. Regardless of program trading or high-frequency trading, it is based on quantitative techniques, which makes the book "Quantitative Equity Investing -- Techniques and Strategies" interesting, particularly so for these who want to understand what these "crazy" quants from Wall Street are doing and outsmart the markets or market makers.
Modern quantitative techniques are based on modern portfolio theory, introduced by Harry Markowitz in 1952,
in which he suggested that investors should decide the allocation of their investment funds on the basis of the trade-off between portfolio risk, as measured by the standard deviation of investment returns, and portfolio return, as measured by the expected value of the investment return. ...... Developing the necessary inputs for constructing portfolios based on modern portfolio theory has been facilitated by the development of Bayesian statistics, shrinkage techniques, factor models, and robust portfolio optimization(, with the help of powerful computers).
All these techniques have been skillfully depicted by the export authors, who have all worked closely with hedge fund and quantitative asset management firms, who are famous university professors with series of books focusing on related financial topics.
The book starts with the role and use of mathematical techniques in finance. The authors' argument is very powerful:
As there are unpredictable events with a potentially major impact on the economy, it is claimed that financial economics cannot be formalized as a mathematical methodology with predictive power. In a nutshell, the answer is that black swans exit not only in financial markets but also in the physical sciences. But no one questions the use of mathematics in the physical sciences because there are major events that we cannot predict.
The book continues with financial model building, which covers modern regression theory, applications of Random Matrix Theory, dynamic time series model, vector autoregressive models, cointegration analysis. Then, it moves on to include financial engineering, static and dynamic factor models, asset allocation, portfolio models, transaction costs, trading strategies, etc.
Overall, the book is math-heavy except the first chapter. It is an excellent textbook for students majored in finance. It is also a good guide book for traders who focus on quantitative trading techniques in a daily basis. It is also a recommendation for power investors who start to leverage brokerages' open trading APIs. It is not recommended for these who don't have math background and who don't understand any mathematical terms mentioned in the earlier paragraphs of this review.

Decision Analysis for Healthcare Managers Review

Decision Analysis for Healthcare Managers
Average Reviews:

This is an interesting book that covers a variety of tools helpful to decision makers in the health industry. While these tools have been individually presented in other papers and books, I think this is probably the first book that has it all together. It first covers the very basics of what decision analysis is, as well as the fundamentals of probability. Then there are full chapters on decision trees, modeling group decisions, root-cause analysis, ... (see the table of contents). Within each chapter, there are real-world driven examples from the health industry with explanations of the detailed process in conducting the analysis (e.g. with sample interviews with the decision makers to get the parameters). I think it's a very good reference if you want to learn a decision analysis tool in detail with some health care examples or as a text book on the subject. It doesn't appear to be written to give a brief overview of the field just to satisfy one's curiosity (though the first chapter could help with that). It's more targeted at those who want to learn all or selected concepts and tools in detail.

The first part of the book explains the various analytical tools that simplify and accelerate decision making. Learn about tools that help you determine causes, evaluate choices, and forecast future events. For occasions when a group, rather than an individual, has to make a decision, you will also learn what tools can help you create group consensus. The second half of the book shows you how to apply analytical tools to different healthcare situations, including comparing clinician performance, determining the causes for medical errors, analyzing the costs of programs, and determining the market for new services. Many practical examples walk you step-by-step through common decision-making scenarios.

I teach a simulation course using this book. It is one of the best textbooks I have ever used in any discipline. It is extremely well designed for an undergraduate audience. For more emphasis on the statistical fundamentals of simulation, I recommend Law and Kelton's graduate book, but if your goal is to complete a project for a company, or to prepare a comprehensive undergraduate simulation course with plenty of modeling examples and useful exercises, then this is the book that will take you from zero to hero.

This fourth edition of Simulation with Arena has the same goal as the first three editions: to provide a comprehensive treatment of simulation concepts in general and the Arena simulation software in particular. It starts by having the reader develop simple, well-animated, high-level models, and then progresses to advanced modeling and analysis.Statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments is integrated with the modeling chapters, reflecting the joint nature of these activities in good simulation studies. The objective is to help the reader carry out effective simulation modeling, analysis, and projects using the Arena simulation system. An informal, tutorial writing style is used to aid the beginner in fully understanding the ideas and topics presented.Included is a CD containing the current version of the Arena academic software and the examples referenced throughout the text.
Starting with an introduction to simulation concepts, the book progresses through an overview of the Arena software, basic model development, input analysis, additional modeling constructs, output analysis, and advanced modeling. It also includes chapters on integrating Arena simulation models with other applications, specialized statistical issues, continuous simulation, and conducting a successful simulation study. It is intended primarily to be a text in a first course on simulation or for self-study.However, the later chapters could be incorporated into an advanced or graduate-level course.
Building on the success of the first three editions, published in 1998, 2002, and 2004, this edition retains the basic outline and tutorial style, built around a sequence of successively more complicated examples. All the examples and discussion, however, have been modified and updated to be consistent with the current version of the Arena software, and additional examples have been developed, along with more exercises. As before, a password-protected website for instructors provides support in terms of downloadable lecture slides and solutions to end-of-chapter exercises.
The book draws heavily on the experience and expertise of the authors, a professor at the University of Cincinnati specializing in simulation, and two seasoned members of Rockwell Software (formerly Systems Modeling), the developers of Arena, who are active in product design and development, training, consulting, and applications.

The Designer's Guide to Verilog-AMS presents Verilog-AMS, the new analog and mixed-signal extensions to the widely used Verilog hardware description language. It starts by describing a rigorous and proven top-down design methodology. Top-down design is widely seen as the key to being able to design very large and complex mixed-signal circuits and it is enabled by Verilog-AMS. Verilog-A and Verilog-AMS are then introduced without assuming that the reader has a background in behavioral modeling. Finally, it includes a comprehensive reference guide for the language. The Designer's Guide to Verilog-AMS is extensively cross-referenced and indexed, making it an ideal reference for both Verilog-A and Verilog-AMS. A companion website, www.designers-guide.com, provides electronic copies of all the models used in this book, a library of user-contributed models, a discussion forum, additional documents on simulation and modeling, and other useful material. The Designer's Guide to Verilog-AMS is written for analog and mixed-signal designers, particularly those designing larger and more complex circuits.
